VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds survived turnover troubles and shooting struggles to down the Saskatchewan Huskies 69-60 on Saturday night at War Memorial Gym.

Team-scoring leader Jamelle Barrett struggled mightily with his shot, but still led his team with 17 points, 15 of which came in the second half, but shot just 4-for-20 on the night.

UBC had 11 blocks in the game. Fifth-year centre Balraj Bains had five to his credit.

Michael Lieffers led the effort with 15 rebounds, also adding 11 points for a double double. Kamar Burke was UBC's top rebound man as usual with 12 boards.

The Huskies fall to 6-3 but still lead the East Division, and will look to build on that lead next weekend in Calgary.

The Thunderbirds are 6-2 and in second place behind Victoria in the West. They will get a chance to pick up some ground next weekend when they take on Thompson Rivers.

Golden Bears-Vikes Stats

VICTORIA - The CIS #5 Victoria Vikes used strong transitional play to defeat the #6 Alberta Golden Bears, 83-77, at Ken and Kathy Shields Court at McKinnon Gymnasium in front of over 1,000 fans on Saturday.

With the win the Vikes improve to 9-1, while Alberta slips to 5-4.

Terrell Evans provided some timely baskets in transition in the paint, but it was Michael Acheampong who led the Vikes, with 23 points. Ryan MacKinnon added 20 points, along with four steals and four assists.

Daniel Ferguson led the Golden Bears, with 26 points. Jordan Baker had a double-double for Alberta, with 25 points, 12 rebounds and four assists.

Next week, Fraser Valley is at Victoria, while Lethbridge travels to face Alberta.

LANGLEY, BC – Trinity Western got its second win of 2012 with a 107-97 victory over Calgary on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans were especially dominant in the first quarter as they outscored Calgary by 15 points and then managed to maintain a lead the rest of the way.

Trinity Western was led by Kyle Coston, who had 28 points and seven rebounds, Sean Peter, who had 25 points and four rebounds and Tristan Smith, who had 17 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and four steals.

Calgary was led by Tyler Fidler, who had 23 points, all of which came in the second half, and Boris Bakovic, who had 22 points and seven rebounds in his return to the court after missing the first half of the season with a knee injury.

The win moves Trinity Western to 4-6 on the year while the loss drops Calgary to 3-7.

Both teams are back in action January 13-14, with the Spartans travelling to UBC-Okanagan to play the Heat while Calgary returns home to host Saskatchewan.

Cougars-Bobcats Stats

BRANDON, MB - Despite a fourth-quarter surge by the Bobcats, the Regina Cougars took a 83-74 win in Brandon Saturday night. The Bobcats out-scored the Cougars 27-20 in the fourth, but Regina retained the lead through-out the second half before putting it away.
 
Jared Janotta finished with a double-double, notching a game-high 22 points and adding 12 rebounds. Paul Gareau added 21 points for the Cougars.
 
Fifth-year forward Donovan Gayle had a double-double as well, including a game-high 14 rebounds to go with 12 points. Jordan Reaves had a team-high 21 points for the Bobcats.
 
With the win the Cougars improve to 3-6 while the Bobcats drop to 4-6. The Bobcats will host the Winnipeg Wesmen next Thursday while the Cougars will travel to Winnipeg to play the Manitoba Bisons next Friday.

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the UFV Cascades 87-78 at the Envision Athletic Centre.

The Cascades Canada West conference record falls to 6-4, while the Pronghorns improve to 5-5.  The Cascades unbeaten streak which dated back to February 2011 was stopped at seven.

The Cascades were led by Sam Freeman, with 23 points. Jasper Moedt added 20 points and a team-high six rebounds as Joel Friesen rounded out the players in double-figures, with 15 points. 

The Pronghorns were led by Daryl Cooper's 18 points. Dominyc Coward and Morgan Duce each contributed 17 points in the victory. Coward pulled down nine rebounds.

Next week, Fraser Valley is at Victoria, while Lethbridge face Alberta in Edmonton for a pair of games.

KAMLOOPS, BC — The winning streak is over for the Thompson RiversWolfPack, falling at home to the Manitoba Bisons 86-78 on Saturday.

Thompson Rivers is now 5-5, while Manitoba moves to 6-4 on the season.

Manitoba had three players in double-figures as Jonar Huetaras had 23 points, Kurtis Sansregret 22 and Kevin Oliver19.

Justin King 24 points and 13 rebounds for the WolfPack. Chas Kok put backad 15 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Kevin Pribilsky chipped in with 14 points.

The WolfPack will continue their home stand next weekend (Jan 13-14) as they entertain the UBC Thunderbirds. The two games will be played at the smaller TRU Gym. Manitoba will entertain Regina.

KELOWNA, BC - The UBC Okanagan Heat men’s basketball team took down the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 79-70 on Saturday to earn their first win of 2012.

The win moved them up to 2-6 in conference play, while the Wesmen fall to 2-8.

Guard Yassine Ghomari had 32 points against, including a hat-trick of three-pointers. Ed Dane Medi grabbed nine rebounds and added 11 points. Freshman guard Bret MacDonald contributed 16 points.

Wesmen guard Dominique Brown scored 16 points, while teammates Mark McNee and Eric Zimmerman each added 14.

The Heat host the Trinity Western Spartans next Friday at 8 p.m. at UBC’s Okanagan campus. The Wesmen will visit the Brandon Bobcats on Thursday at 8 p.m. Both games will be broadcasted live at www.canadawest.tv.
