MONTREAL --
Olivia Atkinson of Oakville, Ont., scored the game-winner as sixth-ranked McGill defeated Carleton 3-1 in RSEQ women's hockey at McConnell Arena on Friday. The result kicked off the team's annual Homecoming Weekend before a plethora of former McGill players who witnessed their former team avenge a stunning 4-2 setback in their last meeting with Carleton on Nov. 4. The Martlets improved to 87-3-1 in 91 lifetime match-ups with the Ravens.
McGill, which stretched their win streak to four, dominated the shots on net by a 38-18 margin. They led 1-0 after one period and 3-0 after two.
"We had pretty good control although there were a couple of minutes in the second and third were we weren't that great but overall, it was a pretty good effort," said Martlets head coach
Peter Smith, who improved to 454-178-32 in 17 years behind the McGill bench. "I liked our game tonight. We managed the puck pretty well, we had a lot of scoring chances and played with good energy."
Freshman
Jade Downie-Landry of St. Jean sur Richelieu, Que., opened the scoring at 19:09 of the first, assisted by sophomore linemate
Shana Walker. It was the team-leading sixth marker in eight games for Downie-Landry, a 5-foot-9 power forward who was named a few days ago by Hockey Canada to play with the national development team at the Nations Cup tournament in Germany and Austria, Jan. 4-7.
Atkinson, a 5-foot-6 psychology and economics sophomore, tallied what proved to be the game-winner at 5:16 of the second, set up by forwards
Nicole Howlett and
Melodie Daoust.
Marie-Philip Lavoie, a physical education junior from Pohenegamook, Que., increased the lead to 3-0 on the power play at 14:54 of the middle frame, with helpers from Howlett and Daoust. The two assists for Daoust upped her season points total to 10 in six games, which ties her for third in the RSEQ scoring race, one point shy of second place.
Howlett, a six-foot psychology sophomore from Tsawwassen, B.C., also had a pair of assists and now has five points in eight contests. "She's a big, strong player and creates a lot of space for her linemates and herself," noted Smith. "She's done a real good job adapting from a freshman to being a second-year player.
Tawnya Guindon, the Carleton team captain from Clarence Creek, Ont., ruined the shutout bid by Martlets netminder
Tricia Deguire with a power-play marker of her own at 5:32 of the third. But it was too little, too late for the Ravens.
Deguire, a 5-foot-7 rookie from Sherbrooke, Que., stopped 17 of 18 shots as her record improved to 6-2. The physical education freshman leads the league in wins, goals-against average (1.76) and save percentage (.937).
Katelyn Steele took the loss for Carleton, making 35 saves on 38 chances at the other end of the ice as she dropped to 2-6.
McGill was 1-for-4 on the power play while the Ravens went 1-for-3. The Martlets are slowly moving up the ladder and now rank third among the conference's five teams in PP percentage (18.2). They remain last in penalty-killing at 78.8 per cent.
McGill, which improved to 6-2 remains atop the RSEQ standings, tied with the Montreal Carabins (6-4) but hold two games in hand. The Martlets will close out the fall semester with road games at Concordia (2-5) on Dec. 2 and Ottawa (5-2-1) on Dec. 4.
Carleton (2-6-1) will host Montreal (6-4-0) and Concordia on Dec. 2 and Dec. 4, respectively..
