Canada West Friday men's hockey: #7 Bisons pick up fifth win; Cougars pull out win over Dinos

REGINA – Matt Strueby’s first CIS hat trick lifted the Regina Cougars men’s hockey team to a 4-1 win over #9 Calgary on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
 
Strueby opened the scoring six minutes into the first period, then gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission after scoring what would turn out to be the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in the opening frame.
 
Blake Clement scored Calgary’s lone goal of the contest with under a minute remaining in the second period, but Carter Selinger restored the two-goal advantage for the Cougars with a goal five minutes into the third.
 
Strueby, who finished off the hat trick with an empty net goal in the waning moments of the game, now has a Canada West-leading seven goals on the season.
 
Calgary held a decisive 31-17 advantage in shots, but Cougar goalie Lucas Gore made 30 saves to lock down his third win of the season. Kris Lazaruk made 13 saves for the Dinos.
 
The win improves Regina’s Canada West record to 3-5-1 as the Cougars move into sole possession of sixth place in the conference standings, while Calgary falls to 6-5-0. The two teams will meet again on Saturday night at The Co-operators Centre.

EDMONTON - On the strength of their fourth-straight win, the CIS #6 Alberta Golden Bears reclaimed first place in Canada West for the first time since the opening weekend of the season by defeating the UBC Thunderbirds 4-1 at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton on Friday night.

The 7-2-2 Golden Bears had three players grab two points, as both rearguard Colin Joe and forward Jordan Hickmott scored a goal and an assist each while defender Ian Barteaux tallied a pair of helpers. Team-leading scorer Sean Ringrose also notched a goal for the home team, as did rookie Travis Toomey, who salted the game away with a shorthanded empty-netter.

Freshman Michael Wilgosh potted the lone goal for the 4-3-2 T-birds, the former Winkler Flyer’s sixth in nine games.

The two squads will face off again on Saturday in Game 2 of the weekend series, puck drop at 7:00 p.m.

WINIPEG - Four quick goals in the first period spelled disaster for Lethbridge Pronghorns in a 5-2 victory for CIS #7 Manitoba in Friday night men's hockey.

Manitoba’s goals were scored by Blair Macaulay, Chris Benias, Mike Hellyer, Brendan Rowinski, and Myles Rumsey.  The Bisons started Jesse Deckert in net, who made a total of 23 saves in his winning effort.

The Pronghorns’ goals were netted by Curtis Cooper, and Winston Day Chief.  Goaltender Scott Bowles let in four goals on 11 shots before being pulled and replaced by Dylan Miller-Tait, who stopped a total of 25 shots on the evening.

The Manitoba Bisons play next on Saturday, November 12 in a rematch against the Lethbridge Pronghorns.  Game time is 7 p.m. CT at the Max Bell Centre on the University of Manitoba campus.
