Holwell nets overtime winner for X-Men over Moncton

Moncton, NB – The StFX X-Men skated a 2-1 overtime victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus Friday night.

Freshman defenseman Adam Holwell was the overtime hero, netting the game winning goal 1:03 into the extra frame.

The Aigles Bleus had tied the game at one goal apiece with only 1:21 left to play in the third period. Marc-Anthony Therrie was the Moncton goal scorer off a set-up from Vincent Lanoue and Alexandre Bernier.

The teams had played scoreless hockey through the first and second periods. The first period was lopsided in Moncton's favour with shots at 16-4, while it was the X-Men who had more chances in the second period at 17-6.

X-Men captain Mark Tremaine broke the goose egg in the game midway through the third period with a shorthanded goal. Holwell assisted on the play then the two connected again for the overtime winner.

For his efforts Holwell received Subway player of the game honours.

Blade Mann-Dixon earned the win in the StFX net with 29 saves as shots were even at 30-30 by the conclusion of overtime.            Etienne Montpetit took the loss between the pipes for the Aigles Bleus.

The X-Men will be back in action on Saturday night when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in a 7pm game at the Charles V. Keating Centre. The Aigles Bleus next see action on October 26th when they face-off against the same StFX squad in Antigonish.
