Friday men's hockey: #4 Golden Bears win, Kurtis Mucha first goalie in Canada West history to score

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds lost 5-4 to Saskatchewan Friday night, narrowly missing a chance to take a victory from Canada's second-ranked team.
 
The visiting Huskies got goals from Matthew Spafford, Andrew Bailey, Michael Kaye, Chris Durand and Brennan Bosch while Cole Pruden, Nate Fleming, Sscott Wasden and Kevin Smith all tallied for the Thunderbirds.
 
The overtime loss drops UBC to 4-2-1 and third place in the Canada West conference. Saskatchewan improves to 6-1-0, maintaining their first place standing.

The Thunderbirds will have another chance to take down the Huskies on Saturday as they host Saskatchewan, 7:00 p.m. at Father David Bauer Arena.

Golden Bears-Pronghorns Stats

LETHBRIDGE, AB – University of Alberta goaltender Kurtis Mucha did it all for the Golden Bears Friday night, stopping 18 of 19 shots and became the first goaltender in Canada West history to be credited with scoring a goal en route to a 7-1 road victory, over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

Alberta’s other goals  were scored by Sean Ringrose, Ian Barteaux, Rhett Rachinski, Levko Koper, Kurtis Mucha and Brett Ferguson, who earned two on the night.

Chase Schaber scored the lone marker for the Pronghorns.

Damien Ketlo got his second consecutive start in goal for the ‘Horns and faced 37 shots on the night before being relieved by Dylan Tait in the third period.

With the win the Bears improve to 4-3-0 and snap a three game losing streak. For the ‘Horns, they are still in search of their first win of the season and fall to 0-6-1.

The teams faceoff again on Saturday, 7:00 p.m. at Nicholas Sheran Arena.

CALGARY – Power-play goals 47 seconds apart late in the second period proved to be the difference as the Manitoba Bisons dropped the Calgary Dinos 4-1 Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena in Calgary.

With Calgary defenceman Ryan Gillen sent off on a major penalty for a check from behind, James Henry and Brendan Rowinski scored on the ensuing power play to blow open what had been a tight 1-0 game, giving the Bisons a three-goal cushion heading into the third period. The teams traded goals in the final stanza, with Kevin King potting the Dinos’ only marker of the night, his fourth of the young season.

The loss drops Calgary to 4-3-0 on the season, with the win vaulting Manitoba to the same 4-3-0 mark.

Dustin Butler was the goaltender of record for Calgary. Jesse Deckert picked up the win for Manitoba.

The teams meet again on Saturday at Father David Bauer Arena, with puck drop at 6:00 p.m.

REGINA – The Regina Cougars tart to the conference schedule as they edged Mount Royal by a 2-1 score on Friday night in a Canada West game at The Co-operators Centre.
 
Tyler Murray and Tyler Henry both scored for Regina, while Lucas Gore got the start between the pipes and stopped 28 of Mount Royal’s 29 shots in the victory. The win improves the U of R’s record to 5-2-0 as the Cougars move into sole possession of second place in the Canada West standings with 10 points.
 
Eric Galbraith replied for Mount Royal, which drops to 1-6-0 on the season.
 
The teams meet again at The Co-operators Centre on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
