Cascades-Huskies Stats

by Josh Hartshorn, Huskie Sports Info Assistant

SASKATOON - When the Jamelle Barrett three point field goals dried up, Fraser Valley took advantage.

Despite an early flourish of long-range bombs by the University of Saskatchewan third-year guard, the Cascades were able to erase a 20-point deficit and defeat the defending national champion Huskies at home 100-90 and earn their first win of the season in Saskatoon Sunday night.

Barrett opened the game with eight three-point field goals in the first half, and would finish with nine on 14 attempts. He now shares the Huskies single-game record with Kyle Grant, who dropped nine in 2008 against Manitoba, and is tied for the second-highest number of three-pointers ever in a Canada West game. Current Regina Cougars guard Jeff Lukomski owns the CW single-game record, with 11.

Zeon Gray led five Cascades players in double digits Sunday night with 28 points. Joel Friesen did his part with 18. Barrett was the most potent force for the Huskies on the night, finishing with 36. Rejean Chabot provided a spark off the bench with 21 points.

UFV is now 1-3 on the year while Saskatchewan dips to 3-3.

UFV hosts Victoria next weekend, while the Huskies are on the road to take on Lethbridge.

EDMONTON - Todd Bergen-Henengouwen tipped in the winning bucket with 0.2 seconds remaining on the clock to lift the Alberta Golden Bears to an 88-86 upset victory over the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds at the U of A's Main Gym on Saturday night.

The Bears (3-1) hung tough on Saturday, going toe-to-toe with the T-Birds (4-2).

Bergen-Henegouwen tipped home a Jordan Baker miss with almost no time left of the clock. The second-year forward led the Bears with 29 points and added five rebounds in the win. Baker scored 17 points, thanks in large part to a 9-of-11 performance from the charity stripe, to go along with 11 boards. Daniel Ferguson paced the Bears early with 18 first half points en route to 24 on the night.

UBC showed good depth on offence with eight players scoring seven points or more. Tommy Nixon and Graham Bath led the way with 13 apiece while Burke had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Bisons-Vikes Stats

by Mike Tucker, UVic Sports Info

VICTORIA - The Manitoba Bisons upset the no. 10 UVic Vikes men's basketball team in an overtime shootout, prevailing 79-78 to even the weekend series at McKinnon Gym.

The Bisons knocked down 12 three-pointers, including five from Sean Maxwell to improve to 4-1 in league play. Maxwell, who finished with a game-high 19 points, hit two treys in the extra frame to deny the UVic comeback. Eric Garcia finished with 17 points.

In overtime, Zac Andrus' potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out, but the senior still finished with a Vikes' high 16 points. Marco Dolcetti and Jeff Cullen also added 10 apiece. Cullen had to leave the game after sustaining a first half concussion, and the Vikes certainly missed the senior's leadership down the stretch.

The loss drops the Vikes to 3-3, and the team will now travel to Abbotsford for a two-game set with the Fraser Valley Cascades.
