WATERLOO, Ont. - Jessica Prevette of Mississauga, Ont., scored the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks women's hockey team to a 4-0 win over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Sunday night.
Prevette tallied her first goal of the season just a minute and 47 seconds into the contest, the first of three Laurier (2-0-0) goals in the opening 10 minutes and 13 seconds of the game. Also scoring during the run of goals were Robyn Degagne of North Bay, Ont., and Catie Thomson of St. Catharines, Ont., with Prevette picking up her assist on Thomson's powerplay marker.
After allowing three goals on six shots, Laurentian starting netminder Emily Toffoli of Sudbury, Ont., was replaced by Laura Deller of Woodstock, Ont., who fared much better between the pipes. The Hawks would only manage to get one past Deller, who finished the game with 20 saves.
As a team, the purple and gold shut down the Voyageurs (0-2-0), allowing just 12 shots on goal. The beneficiary of the solid defensive play was rookie netminder Nicholle Kovach of Schomberg, Ont. While the first year goalie wasn't tested often, she was strong when she needed to be and earned the win and the shutout in her first career start.
