Sea-Hawks split weekend series with UNB

(FREDERICTON, NB) The Memorial Sea-Hawks earned a split of a weekend double-header with a 62-56 win over the UNB Varsity Reds.

Graciela Diaz-Brito(Santa Cruz, SPA) led the Sea-Hawksrecording a double-double to earn Subway Player of the Game honours.

Diaz-Brito scored 14 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

She was one of four Memorial starters to score 10 or more.

Hannah Currie(Collingwood, ON) scored 14 for UNB, while Katelyn Mangold(Peterborough, ON) added 11.

"We were mentally prepared for the fight again," said Diaz-Brito. "We were back and we did as we do in practice."

The Sea-Hawks, coming off a 22 point loss to the Varsity Reds on Saturday, looked like a better team from the tip-off. Memorial built a 17-12 lead through one quarter and led 36-27 at the half.

"We talked last night about how hard we defend in practice and how bad we did yesterday," said Diaz-Brito. "I think just can't allow that, we can't beat ourselves."

The Varsity Reds attempted to rally, but shots were not falling and UNB had difficulty containing the Sea-Hawks possessions.

UNB did make a late charge, but it was too little and too late.

Eva Tumwine(Fredericton, NB) scored with 1:12 to play to trim MUN's lead to 8, and Currie sank a jumper with just under 40 seconds to play to make it 60-54.

In the end, the Sea-Hawks pulled out a 62-56 victory.

"We got outworked and when you get outworked you usually lose basketball games if you're playing a good opponent, and MUN is a good opponent," said Varsity Reds head coach Jeff Speedy.

"There's absolutely no reason or excuse for it," added Speedy.

With the win, the Sea-Hawks draw even at 6-6 on the season.

UNB's record falls to 8-3, still good for third place in the Atlantic University Sport standings.

Up next for Memorial, a pair of home games against St. FX, on Saturday and Sunday.

The Varsity Reds visit Dalhousie on Saturday for a four-point match.
