In women's basketball, #6 Fraser Valley defeats Manitoba 85-68

Bisons fall to 3-9

Box Score WINNIPEG – Both the Manitoba Bisons women's basketball team and the #6 Fraser Valley Cascades looked to bounce back after both teams suffered Friday night losses as they squared off on Saturday, January 11 at Investors Group Athletic Centre.

The Fraser Valley Cascades jumped out to an early lead and held on to best the Manitoba Bisons 85-68. The Cascades improve their season's record to 8-4. The Bisons have lost their ninth straight and drop to 3-9 on the season.

"We didn't come to play in the first half," said Bisons co-head coach Michele Hynes. "You're not going to win many games when you're giving up 30 points a quarter."

Forward Kayli Sartori turned in a great performance for the Fraser Valley Cascades, finishing with 18 points. Close behind her was Nicole Wierks, who finished the night with 12 points and five rebounds.

The Bisons finished the game shooting 45.9% from the field and were led by guard Robyn Eyer, who turned in a 19-point game for Manitoba.

Fraser Valley dominated Manitoba in the first half by converting 10-of-11 shots from the foul line and an impressive three-point shooting display from Sartori, who was 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. The Bisons found themselves down double-digits early in the first quarter, and went into the locker rooms at halftime down 57-36 against the Cascades. Leading the way for Manitoba at the half was Sheree Carmona-Gomez and Robyn Eyer with eight points each.

Faced with an uphill climb at the start of the third, the Bisons slowed the Cascades' offense down enough to outscore them 18-9 and whittle Fraser Valley's lead to 12 to start of the fourth. But the Cascades turned things up in the fourth, leading by as much as 20 in the game's closing minutes.

The Bisons will travel to Brandon next week to play the Bobcats on Friday, January 17 in the first of their two-game weekend. Fraser Valley will travel to play the Thompson River WolfPack on Friday, January 17.
