ABBOTSFORD, BC - The UFV Cascades defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 94-83 on Saturday to sweep the two game regular season series at Envision Athletic Centre.

The Cascades record improves to 12-5, as they remain in third place. UBC sits second in the Pacific Division.     

Joel Friesen led the UFV charge, with 23 points. Sam Freeman added 19 points. The Thunderbirds were led by Nathan Yu, with a game-high 27 point performance.

Next week UFV is at TWU, with UBC hosting Victoria.

Pronghorns-Bobcats Stats

BRANDON, MB - It was destined to be an epic night, and the Brandon Bobcats delivered. After 46 years in the historic BU Gymnasium, the Bobcats came away with an emphatic 87-75 win in the final basketball game in the old facility.
 
Ilarion Bonhomme picked up a double-double (25 points, 10 assists) for the Bobcats, as did Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak (12 points, 10 rebounds).  Kyle Vince finished with 16 points in his final home game as a Bobcat.
 
The Pronghorns were led by Daryl Cooper's 22 points, while Dominyc Cooper picked up a double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds).
 
The win improves the Bobcats record to 7-11, but more importantly keeps their playoff hopes alive as they now sit just one game back of Calgary and Manitoba who both have records of 8-10. Lethbridge falls to 9-9 on the season.

Next weekend, Regina is at Lethbridge, while Brandon plays Alberta on the road.

#4 Saskatchewan 95 Winnipeg 74

WINNIPEG - Jamelle Barrett and Peter Lomuro combined for 44 points to lead the Saskatchewan Huskies to a 95-74 victory over the Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

Barrett finished the game with 25 points, including a trio of three pointers to along with six assists. Lomuro added 19 points, with three-three pointers.

The victory improves the CIS #4 Huskies record to 13-4. Winnipeg, with the loss, falls to 4-14.

Michael Lieffers also had a strong game for the Huskies scoring 12 points and grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.

Mark McNee led the Wesmen with 24 points and eight rebounds. James Horaska finished with 13. Andrew Cunningham added 10 points and seven assists.

The Huskies will entertain Manitoba next weekend. Winnipeg will close out the regular season in Calgary against the Dinos.

KELOWNA, BC - The Victoria Vikes will have a very big matchup next weekend in their home and home with the Thunderbirds. The Vikings dropped the UBC Okanagan Heat for the second straight night on Saturday with a strong defensive effort, besting the Okanagan team 68-39.

Ryan MacKinnon led the Vikes in scoring, with 19 points on 7-11 shooting. His backcourt mate Michael Acheampong also had a hot hand, torching the Heat for 18 points.
 
Senior post player Simon Pelland led the way for the home squad with 16 points. Yassine Ghomari's shooting woes continues as he was held to just nine points, well below his season average of 17.5.

UVic will tip off against the Thunderbirds for the Pacific Division title in a home-and-home series; the Heat will also play a home versus the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, Saturday in Kamloops and Sunday in Kelowna.

REGINA – The CIS #10-ranked Alberta Golden Bears completed the weekend sweep over the Regina Cougars with an 89-60 victory on Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health & Sport.
 
Alberta (12-6) was led by Daniel Ferguson, scoring 27 points. Jordan Baker had 15 points for Alberta, while Robert Dewar chipped in with 11.
 
Vule Grujic led the Cougars (5-12) in points (15) and rebounds (14), while Paul Gareau had 10 points and Connor Burns pulled down 13 rebounds.
 
Alberta finishes off the conference schedule next weekend at home against Brandon, while the Cougars will visit Lethbridge next weekend and finish off the Canada West slate on Feb. 18 at Saskatchewan.

LANGLEY, BC – Trinity Western won its eighth game in its last nine outings as they completed a weekend sweep of Thompson Rivers with a 97-92 win on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

Despite Thompson Rivers’ Justin King getting 29 points and Chas Kok adding 28, it was the depth of the Spartans – five players hit double-digit points – that won the day. Kok also had 10 rebounds, and King added four rebounds and four steals.

For the second night in a row Trinity Western’s Sean Peter was the man of the hour as he had 27 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Calvin Westbrook had 19 points and five boards, Kurtis Osborne 17 points, eight rebounds.

The win improves Trinity Western to 10-7, who are already assured of the wildcard spot in the Canada West playoffs, while the loss drops Thompson Rivers to 5-11.

The Spartans will play their final game of the Canada West regular season Feb. 9 when they host Fraser Valley at 8:00 p.m. at the Langley Events Centre. The WolfPack will return home for its next game Feb. 11 against UBC Okanagan in what is the first leg of a weekend home-and-home with the Heat.
