Volleyball prepares for AUS opener after Interlock

MONTREAL, Que. - To begin the 2014-15 regular season, Acadia battled against the RSEQ conference teams: Laval, Montreal, McGill and Sherbrooke in the Interlock competition hosted by Montreal.

In Fridays match up against the 2013-14 CIS Bronze medalists Laval, Acadia went point for point with their aggressive opponent in set one and two before being defeated 0-3. Acadia fell 23-25, 22-25, 14-25. Both 2nd year middle Fiona McGuinty and 3rd middle Marissa Chin were stand outs posting the highest attack efficiencies for Acadia. "Not to discredit our middles, but their success was enabled by our teams solid service reception, it opens up options for our setter", says Head Coach, Michelle Wood. McGuinty and 2nd year outside hitter Sarah Ross lead the team in blocks.

Day two Acadia challenged Montreal in what Coach Wood would highlight was a "positive showing" for the Acadia Women's Volleyball team. "We weren't outmatched and forced Montreal to play some great volleyball." Acadia would eventually lose the match 3 straight 18-25, 23-25, 19-25. "Our block timing and location was off leaving our defenders with more responsibility than they could handle. This would continue to be the case for the remainder of the weekend and something we'll pay a lot of attention to in the coming weeks."

While managing a small roster due to injuries, Acadia's mental and physical strength faded in both the matches vs McGill and Sherbrooke being defeated 0-3 in each. "Although there were good components to each of those matches it was no where near what we are capable of or what was required to compete with McGill and Sherbrooke." Sarah Ross had a stand out performance against Sherbrooke while 5th year Libero Hillary Monette was the glue holding the team together the entire weekend with her consistent reception and leadership on the court.

At the end of the weekend it's great to be able to say we executed the things we have been diligently training: serve receive, coverage and aggressive defensive transition and lastly out of system setting. Ultimately the team that competed in Quebec this weekend was a much more aggressive, fast and technical sound team than what we have demonstrated in previous years.

Acadia will continue with regular season play taking on Moncton and UNB in New Brunswick next weekend.
