Panthers defeat Sea-Hawks 1-0 in extra time to open Subway AUS women’s soccer championship

(MONCTON, N.B.) - In the opening quarterfinal match of the 2013 Subway AUS women's soccer championship, the fourth-seeded UPEI Panthers defeated the fifth-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks by a score of 1-0 in extra time Friday in front of 217 fans at Rocky Stone Field in Moncton, N.B.

UPEI's Sarah Stanley (Charlottetown, P.E.I.), named a second team AUS all-star Friday night, scored the game-winner off a header in the box with 11 minutes remaining in the second period of extra time to give the Panthers the win and a berth in Saturday's semifinal.

In wet and windy conditions, neither team was able to find the back of the net after 90 minutes of regulation time. The game remained scoreless through the first extra period before Stanley headed in the game's only goal.

Fifth-year UPEI keeper Ashley McKenna (Stratford, P.E.I.) made five saves in 120 minutes of play to record the shutout and the victory.

Rookie keeper Jaime Crocker (St. John's, N.L.) started in goal for the Sea-Hawks, turning aside all four shots on goal. Hannah Noseworthy (Mount Pearl, N.L.) took over in the second half and kept the Panthers off the score sheet until the 109th minute.

Stanley was named Subway Player of the Game for the Panthers while Memorial's Paula Whitten was Subway Player of the Game for the Sea-Hawks.

UPEI's semifinal opponent will be either the top-seeded Cape Breton Capers or the second-seeded Dalhousie Tigers, and will be determined following Friday's second quarterfinal.
