ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The UOIT women's hockey team did not have the puck bounce their way on Saturday afternoon as the Brock Badgers cruised to a 5-0 shutout over the Ridgebacks.
UOIT could not find a way to stop Welland native Cara Sayles who scored three goals and an assist in the lopsided win.
The Badgers scored the first goal of the game just two minutes in, the only goal Sayles did not have a part in. She would score her first goal 16:28 into the opening frame to extend the Badgers lead to 2-0.
After recording an assist on the Badgers third goal 3:40 into the second period, Sayles second of the night was a back-breaker as she put Brock up 4-0 with five seconds to go.
In the third period, she would complete the hat-trick scoring on UOIT goaltender
Briar Hughes (Thornton, Ont.), who came into the game in relief after starter
Cassie Charette (Ottawa, Ont.) was pulled after allowing four goals in 40 minutes.
Brock outshot UOIT 28-23 while going 1-for-5 on the power play. UOIT's power play struggles continued as they went 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
UOIT has dropped two straight games and falls to 2-3-2 on the year, 10th place in the conference standings. Brock improves to 4-3-1.
Up next for UOIT will be a road game against the Queen's Gaels on Friday, Nov. 11. Game time in Kingston will be 12:30 p.m.
