Sea-Hawks Get Blanked by Axemen

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Acadia Axemen win by five as they blank the Memorial University Seahawks on Sunday afternoon.

The Axemen found their rhythm early, firing plenty of shots before one of midfielder Ryan Parris (Pembroke, Bermuda) beat the netminder for his second of the season. Parris' goal would be the game winner and earned him the Subway Player of the Game award.

Five minutes later, Travis Fenning (Ottawa, Ont.) gave Acadia an insurance goal.

Late in the first half, Maxwell Guthrie (Ottawa, Ont.) outran a Memorial defender to receive a long lead-pass and made no error on the up-close shot that brought the score to 3-0 before half.

Acadia scored twice in the second half - a nice feed from Gordon McLaughlin (Peterborough, Ont.) was swiftly kicked by Tylor Connolly (Quispamsis, N.B.) at 83', and it was Connolly who set up Alec MacKenzie (Fall River, N.S.) 5 minutes later to put the game out of reach at 5-0.

Keeping the ball in the offensive end, the Axemen were able to give goaltender Nic Jeffries (Rothesay, N.B.) an easy shutout, requiring no saves on his part. Jeffries was more than happy to sit back and watch his defense take over: "It's great because it shows that the boys out front are keeping the ball away from me, so that means we're playing well. We kept the ball moving in front of us. The score - 5-0 - reflects that we were probably on their side for most of the game. That helps me out and I don't have to worry about as much."

The Axemen go on the road next weekend to play UNB on Saturday, then Mount Allison on Sunday, where they will look to maintain their perfect record.

Memorial will regroup from the loss and play Saint Mary's University on Saturday.
