Panthers beat Huskies 1-0 with surprise second-half goal

(Halifax, NS)--Kieran Moore's individual effort in the 46th minute was the difference maker Sunday afternoon in a 1-0 UPEI Panther win over the host Saint Mary's Huskies in men's AUS soccer action.

The Cornwall, PE native gained possession for UPEI off a Huskies turnover and forced two consecutive corner kicks to start the second-half.

Moore's ball bounced around the SMU box when Mark Ashlee (Victoria, BC) booted it thru for a 1-0 Panthers' lead in the 46th minute.

It was the first goal for UPEI (1-4-1 4points) this season and was enough for goalie Windsor Junction, Nova Scotia's Brett Strba (1-4-0) to hold on for the win with two saves.

The Huskies nearly drew even in the 79th minute off a corner kick when Alex Black (Halifax, NS) beat Strba but a sliding UPEI defender deflected the ball.

Christian Oxner (Halifax, NS) picked up the loss in nets making four saves for Saint Mary's (0-2-2 2points).

UPEI outshot SMU 8-7 while the Huskies had more corner kicks (3-2) and saves (4-3).

Both teams hit the road September 30th with UPEI visiting Mount Allison (0-5-1 1pt) while Saint Mary's travels to Acadia (4-1-0 12pts).

Both games are at 7:15p.m.
