CIS No. 4 X-Women top No. 3 Gee Gee's in exhibition play

Ottawa, ON – The CIS No. 4 ranked X-Women rugby team played a pair of split squad exhibition games against the CIS No. 3 Ottawa Gee Gee's in the national's capital on Friday evening and came away with two victories.

The X-Women white squad defeated he Gee Gee's 27-21 in the first game, then the blue team followed up with a 33-5 victory.

StFX fly half Sabrina McDaid opened the scoring in the game with a penalty kick to give the X-Women a 3-0 lead.

The Gee Gee's then scored three consecutive tries, all converted, to go ahead 21-3. Third year prop Joanna Alphonso scored at the end of the first half for the X-Women and McDaid made good on the conversion to cut the lead to 21-10 at halftime.

Fullback Breanna Allison pulled the X-Women to within 21-15 as she scored an exciting try, running the full length of the pitch.

Miranda Sample tied the game, scoring a try off a scrum deep in the Gee's Gee's end. McDaid's conversion gave the X-Women a slim 22-21 advantage.

Alphonso's second try of the evening (unconverted) gave StFX a more comfortable edge at 27-21 and the final score held.

In the second game of the evening, freshman flanker Sophia Parker scored three tries for StFX as they defeated the Gee Gee's 33-5.

Single tries were scored by Hannah Morten and Alex Hamilton while Dominique Lalande booted four conversions to round out the X-Women scoring.

The X-Women are back in exhibition action on Saturday when they will meet Carleton in another split squad doubleheader. Game times are 12:00 and 1:00 pm in Ottawa.
