Huskies down Sea-Hawks 3-0

The Saint Mary's Huskies women's volleyball team is off to a terrific start after they put the Memorial Sea-Hawks away 3-0 in authoritative fashion tonight at the Dalplex in the opening match of the Dalhousie women's volleyball invitational.

The Sea-Hawks held an early 4-3 lead in the first set but it would not last as the Huskies started to get into their groove. They capitalized on many errors by the Sea-Hawks and played their way to a 25-19 win in the first set.

In the second set, the teams fought tooth in nail to start before Saint Mary's rattled off a 12-2 run to open the lead to 18-9. The Sea-Hawks then staged a charge of their own to tie the game at 25, but the Huskies came away with the 27-25 win after a thundering ace.

It was much closer in the third set with the Sea-Hawks trying to go down in straight sets. With the set at 19-16 in Saint Mary's favor, the Huskies went on a 6-0 run to seal the deal.

Rachel Windhorst led the Huskies with eight kills, while she added five digs. Shelby Michaels and Maddie Clarke both recorded seven kills on the night, and Clarke was named the player of the game.

Lauren Miller and Krista Hogan each had seven kills in the loss for the Sea-Hawks.

The Sea-Hawks will try and get into the win column when they face the Acadia Axewomen tomorrow at 12:30pm, while the Huskies play the early game against the University at Moncton tomorrow at 10:00am.
