Hockey X-Men handle Tommies 5-1

Fredericton, NB – The StFX X-Men (2-3-0) earned their second win of the season Friday night with a 5-1 victory over the St. Thomas Tommies (0-3-2) at Grant Harvey Arena. The visitors spoiled the Tommies home opener as they remain in search of their first AUS win of the 2014-15 season.

StFX's Ted Stephens (Whitehorse, YT) and Steven Kuhn (Oyen, AB) scored 53 seconds apart to give the X-Men an early 2-0 lead just over five minutes into the game.

Stephen's goal came at 4:37 off an assist by Blake Gal (Lethbridge, AB), then Kuhn followed up unassisted at 5:09.

The 2-0 lead held after 20 minutes of play as the X-Men held a 16-10 shot margin in the first period.

Colin Martin closed the gap for the Tommies with a power play goal just 21 seconds into the second period after the X-Men were assessed with a bench minor at the end of the first. Martin break in alone unassisted to beat X-Men netminder Drew Owsley (Lethbridge, AB).

The X-Men regained their two-goal lead when defenseman Bronson Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, AB) scored a pretty goal at 8:54 from Jagger Dirk (Pentincton, BC) and Cory MacIntosh (North Sydney, NS).

The Tommies were unable to solve Owsley for the remainder of the game as the blue and white scored two more goals in the third period.

Subway player of the game Rob Slaney (Portugal Cove, NF) tallied at 15:53 as freshmen Adam Stevens (Bedford, NS) and Trey Lewis (Aldouane, NB) had the helpers.

Cole Grbavac (Calgary, AB) rounded out the X-Men scoring with under two minutes to play in the game from Stephens and Gal. Stephens took home second star honors for his two-point effort.

Rankyn Campbell from the Tommies was recognized as the third star of the game.

Owsley turned aside 28 St. Thomas shots for the win in nets for X while Tyson Teichmann was tagged with the loss for the Tommies.

StFX outshot the Tommies 37-29. There was only two minor penalties called in the game, one to each side.

Both teams will be back in action Saturday night in AUS play. St. Thomas will host Dalhousie (0-5-0) while the X-Men travel to Charlottetown to face UPEI (2-2-1). Puck drop is 7:00 pm for both games.
