The St. Thomas University Tommies blanked the Mount Allison Mounties 6-0 in AUS women’s hockey action Sunday afternoon in front of 164 spectators at the Grant-Harvey Centre.

With the win, the Tommies remain undefeated with a record of 4-0.

“MTA is always a good team. If you sit back on them they’ll beat you,” Tommies head coach Peter Murphy said after the game.  “If you go at them, you can play your game. I like the way we played our game and I like the way we match up against any team when we play our game.”

The Tommies opened the scoring 6:53 into first after Lauren Legault slid back door and finished a great feed from Alisha Gilbert. The pair connected again midway through the frame, but this time it was Legault who set up Gilbert—she beat Mounties netminder Kerri Martin stick side to put the Tommies up 2-0.

“She gets a lot of credit for that line doing well,” Murphy said of Gilbert.

“On Legault’s goal she got the puck and heard Legault screaming bloody murder coming down the slot. Last year, she would have had that puck and just thrown it at the net. That’s the progression of her game, which is allowing her to start playing with better players.”

With just under seven minutes to go in the frame, Rahel Michielin buried the rebound off a Myfanwy Thomson slapper to give the Tommies a 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes.

The Mounties came out with energy in the second stanza, but couldn’t convert on their scoring opportunities.

With 5:31 on the clock, Emily Oleksuk potted her third of the season off a great individual rush for a 4-0 Tommies lead.

Lauren Henman got things started for the Tommies in the third, scoring 40 seconds into the frame after waiting out Lindsay Wray, who took over in goal for the Mounties. Just over two minutes later, Henman netted her second of the game to put the Tommies up 6-0.

The Mounties pressured to get on the board, but weren’t able to beat Tommies goaltender Taylor Cook.

This was the second straight shutout for the Tommies in goal—Abby Clarke turned away all 17 shots she faced against the UPEI Panthers Friday night in Charlottetown.

Murphy wasn’t surprised.

“They’re both number one goalies. If one plays a good game, the other one tends to be pushed to play a good game as well,” he said.

The Tommies are back in action Friday, October 28 when they travel to Moncton to take on the UdeM Aigles Bleues.

The Mounties host the StFX X-Women on Saturday, October 29.
