UBC 32 Alberta 28

by Matt Gutsch, U of Alberta Sports Info

EDMONTON - Up by two points in the fourth quarter, and with less than 15 seconds on the clock, the Alberta Golden Bears football team looked poised to post their third victory of the season and first at Foote Field this year.  However, UBC runningback Perry Harder popped that balloon, scampering into the Alberta endzone from 32-yards out with 10.5 seconds on the clock, to serve up a 32-28 deflating loss to the Bears, Saturday afternoon in Edmonton.

T-Birds-Golden Bears Game Stats

The Thunderbirds improve to 2-4 on the season, while the Bears have now lost four straight games, and fall to 2-4.  Alberta also hasn’t won at home this season, and hasn’t beaten UBC at Foote Field since 2006.

The game featured six lead changes as both teams struggled to move the ball effectively, manage the clock, avoid penalties, and protect the score.  In the end, the Thunderbirds, fighting for their playoff lives, made more plays at critical times than their hosts.  UBC scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of play, erasing a 28-19 fourth quarter deficit.

The Golden Bears are now officially in ‘must win’ territory next Saturday when they return to Foote Field to host the 1-5 Manitoba Bisons.  UBC, now tied with Alberta for the fourth and final playoff spot, hosts the 5-1 Saskatchewan Huskies next Friday in Vancouver.
