VANCOUVER - With 70 seconds left in regulation time, Sarah Casorso scored the game-winning goal to give the UBC Thunderbirds a 4-3 victory over the Calgary Dinos at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre Saturday night.

With the win the 'Birds sweep the best-of-three quarter-final series 2-0 and now move on to the Canada West semifinals next weekend, where they will take on the Saskatchewan Huskies.

Tatiana Rafter, Nikola Brown-John and Melissa Goodwin scored the other goals for UBC. Calgary replied with markers by Erika Mitschke, Heather Berzins and Kelsie Lang.

The Thunderbirds advance to the Canada West semifinals, where they will faceoff against the Saskatchewan Huskies in a best-of-three series beginning next Friday in Saskatoon. UBC finished the year 2-2 against the Huskies, but 0-2 at Rutherford Arena.    

Calgary, the defending CIS silver medalists, are now eliminated.

WINNIPEG  - The Manitoba Bisons fell victim to a furious finish from the Regina Cougars on Saturday at Wayne Fleming Arena (U of M campus), losing 3-1 to end their season.

Looking to tie their best-of-three quarterfinal series and force a deciding third game, they gave up three goals in the last 13 minutes. Regina takes the series 2-0 and moves on to the Canada West semifinals.

Regina got goals from Tori Head, Kelly Regnier and Kylie Gavelin in the win. For Gavelin, it was her second of the weekend. Cougars goalie Jennifer Schmidt was again solid after giving up an early goal, making 24 saves.

Manitoba, meanwhile, got a slick early goal from Kylie Palmer but failed to capitalize on chances later. Palmer's goal ended up being their only one of the weekend. Bisons goalie Amanda Schubert made 14 saves in the loss.

Regina now awaits the winner of the Calgary vs. UBC quarterfinal series to see whether they will travel to second-seed Saskatchewan or top-seed Alberta for the semifinals.

VANCOUVER - In what was arguably their most thrilling and energetic performance of the season, the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Calgary Dinos 3-2 in overtime at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on Friday.

With the victory, UBC takes a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-three Canada West quarter-final.

Melissa Goodwin notched the winner after teammates Nicole Saxvik and Sarah Casorso managed to erase two one-goal Calgary leads that were provided Jessyka Holt and Erika Mitschke.

Goodwin's heroics came just moments after Thunderbirds goaltender Danielle Dube made a huge glove save, taking away what looked like a for sure goal for Sinead Tracey. Dube was outstanding on the evening stopping 24 of 26 shots she faced.
 
In net for Calgary, Tapp went on to stop 33 of 36 shots she faced.

Game two of the best of three series is set for 7 p.m. PT Saturday night at the Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

WINNIPEG - Jennifer Schmidt recorded a shutout for the Regina Cougars as they took Game 1 of a best-of-three quarter-final series from the Manitoba Bisons 2-0 on Friday afternoon at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

Schmidt made 36 saves in the Cougars net. Kylie Gavelin and Stephanie Sawchuk each scored power play goals for the visitors, who went 2-for-2 with the man advantage on the afternoon.
Manitoba finished 0-for-3 on the power play in the evening. They got a 27-save performance from first year goaltender Amanda Schubert.

The Cougars have an opportunity to advance to the Canada West semi-final with a win in Game 2 of the series on Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Wayne Fleming Arena (U of M campus)..
