GUELPH, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team knocked of the CIS No. 4 and previously undefeated York Lions 3-1 tonight at the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre. Set scores were 25-22, 25-12, 12-25 and 25-18.

The first set saw the Gryphons trailing early but a four point run allowed them to forge ahead. York fought back to take a 21-20 lead but Guelph would not fold as they re-took the lead and finished with a 25-22 win. Set two had Guelph in control from the start as they served aggressively and build a huge lead. York briefly pushed back late in the set but the Gryphons closed it out at 25-12. The third set saw a reversal of fortunes as York racked up many points off of aggressive serving and improved defense as they got back in the match with their own 25-12 win. Set four began with another fast start from Guelph jumping out to a 5-0 lead but York fought back right away to even things at 8-8. Leading 11-10, the Gryphons opened up a four point lead and continued to side out consistently eventually allowing them to pull away for a 25-18 victory.

Coach Funk said, "Tonight we followed our game plan to a T and we got seasonal best matches from a number of players, Julie, Kristen & Ashleigh among them."

The Gryphons will play next weekend on the road Saturday at 12pm against Ryerson and Sunday at 3pm against Toronto.
