Friday Football Review: Rams, Huskies post victories

#6 Regina 41 UBC 6

by Happy Kreter, UBC Sports Info Assistant

VANCOUVER - The Regina Rams proved why they are the top ranked team in so many Canada West statistical categories during their 41-6 defeat of the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday. The conference’s top rusher, Adrian Charles, was at the forefront of the Rams attack, racking up 193 yards and two touchdowns against the ‘Birds.

Rams-T-Birds Game Stats

Charles provided the highlight of the night with a 90-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter, the second-longest in team history and tenth-logest rush in Canada West history. Charles broke through the line with incredible speed and seemed to find another gear as he hit open turf. Deep in the UBC end, his stutter step caused two T-Bird tacklers to miss, and Charles picked up a block to allow him to score his second touchdown of the game.

The most glaring evidence of the discombobulated ‘Birds came on a Rams’ fake punt. Kicker Chris Bodnar hooked up with Matt Yausie for a 73-yard pass for a touchdown. Regina also converted a fake field goal for a first down, leading to one of four field goals from Chris Bodnar.

The Thunderbirds will be taking it one play at a time and trying to earn a touchdown for the first time in six quarters of football when they meet the #4 Calgary Dinos next week in Calgary.

Saskatchewan 33 #7 Alberta 9

EDMONTON - Third-year receiver Jade Etienne from Deer Lake, SK hauled in six passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns as the visiting Saskatchewan Huskies burned the #7 Alberta Golden Bears 33-9, Friday night at Foote Field in Edmonton.

Huskies-Golden Bears Game Stats

Veteran Huskies' quarterback Laurence Nixon, originally from Richmond, BC, connected on 25 of 34 attempts for 423 yards and three touchdowns in the win, with sophomore receiver Mitch Stevens also catching a major, and running back Ben Coakwell finding paydirt as well. Saskatchewan, who recently fell out of the national top 10 ranking for the first time since 2007, also scored five points through singles and a safety.

Alberta's lone touchdown came late in the fourth, when freshman quarterback Curtis Dell, subbing for starter Julian Marchand, found receiver Laine Rogers in the end zone for his first CIS scoring drive.

The Golden Bears now fall to 2-2 on the season, having won their first two of the season, but now losing two straight. Saskatchewan improves to 2-2 after losing a shocker last week to the now 1-3 UBC Thunderbirds.

Game Notes
Alberta is now 1-2 in its last three games against Saskatchewan and have been outscored 79-39... Friday's win was the Huskies' first in Edmonton since 2007... O'Neill punted nine times for an average of 43.2 yards and was 1-2 on field goal attempts, missing just wide on a 55-yard attempt as the halftime buzzer sounded. The Ross Sheppard grad certainly had the leg, putting the attempt five yards deep in the end zone, but missed wide to the left... safety Jason Hetherington recorded an interception late in the fourth quarter, giving him three this season, and 13 all-time, which is three behind the all-time Golden Bear record of 16.
