Golden Bears-Thunderbirds Stats

VANCOUVER – The UBC Thunderbirds came into Saturday with a playoff spot locked up but still seeking their first home win of the season, and they got it in emphatic fashion with a 60-0 shutout of the Alberta Golden Bears on David Sidoo Field for the biggest margin of victory ever for UBC football.

Points differential could end up playing a big part in deciding playoff seeding for the 'Birds, who can still finish anywhere from second to fourth in the conference depending on how things play out in the final week of the regular season.

Greg Bowcott finished 20-for-26 for 262 yards and two touchdowns, adding a pair of rushing touchdowns and 72 yards on the ground for his best performance of the season. David Scott hauled in 11 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Running back Brandon Deschamps gained 82 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries before being rested later in the game.

Nik Termansen and Brian Rideout had interceptions for the UBC defence.

The T-Birds improve to 4-3 with the win, moving into a three-way tie for second with Saskatchewan and Manitoba. If all three teams finish the season tied, Saskatchewan will take the spot by virtue of their 2-1 record heads-up against the Bisons and T-Birds. Manitoba would finish third, and UBC fourth.

But if Saskatchewan loses next week and UBC wins, they can still grab the third or even second seed and a home playoff game depending on what happens with Manitoba. If they finish tied in the standings with only Manitoba, the tiebreaker will come down to the teams' points differential for the entire conference season, since their records and points differential in head-to-head games is even.

UBC finishes the regular season at undefeated Calgary next weekend. Saskatchewan wraps up against the Regina Cougars, and Manitoba will be up against Alberta.

Rams-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – Mercer Timmis became Canada West's new single-season touchdown king as the Calgary Dinos eliminated the Regina Rams from the playoffs with a 46-27 win Friday night.

Timmis, who entered the game needing two touchdowns to break Don Blair's (1995) conference and school single-season touchdown record of 17, got three of them in the second half as the Dinos improved to 7-0 on the season while dropping the Rams to 2-5.

The sophomore tailback from Burlington, Ont. had a rough go of things in the first half but came alive in the second and, despite being held to his first sub-100 yard game of the season, still managed to score three touchdowns from six, five, and 18 yards out.

Regina wraps up its 2013 season next weekend hosting the Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday, Oct. 26.

SASKATOON - A strong offensive showing in the second half lifted the visiting Manitoba Bisons to a 33-26 win over the #7 Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday at Griffiths Stadium in PotashCorp Park.

Manitoba quarterback Jordan Yantz threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns in the second half including the game-winning touchdown with 5:50 remaining in the fourth quarter. Yantz found Alex Vitt in the end zone from 28 yards out to secure the win for Manitoba.

With the loss, Saskatchewan drops to 4-3 and sit tied for second in the Canada West with Bisons (4-3). Both the Huskies and Bisons secured a playoff spot thanks to a Regina Rams loss to the Calgary Dinos and both are still in the running for a home playoff date.

Saskatchewan will finish the season in Regina against the Rams next Saturday, while Manitoba travels to Edmonton to meet the Alberta Golden Bears.
