SASKATOON - With 44 points in the third quarter, the No. 3 Saskatchewan Huskies thumped the visiting Thompson Rivers WolfPack 101-76 Friday night at the PAC in Saskatoon.

Led by leading Jamelle Barrett with 13 points and Rejean Chabot with eight points in the third quarter, the Huskies outscored the WolfPack 44-19. The Huskies held the WolfPack to just two points in the first four minutes of the frame. Saskatchewan’s big lead grew to 42 at one point in the quarter and ended with the Huskies ahead 89-51.

With the win the Huskies move to 12-3 and sit on a nine game conference-winning streak. The WolfPack drops to 3-14 on the season with the loss.

Jamelle Barrett finished with a game-high 23 points. Rejean Chabot, Nolan Brudehl and Chris Unsworth each added 15 points for the Huskies. Unsworth and Michael Lieffers each had nine rebounds in the game.

Brett Parker led the scoring for the WolfPack tallying 21 points. Brett Rouault added 17 for Thompson Rivers. Greg Stewart brought down nine rebounds for the WolfPack.

The two teams will battle again Saturday at the PAC. Tip off is set for 8:00 p.m.

#5 Trinity Western 96 Calgary 87

Spartans-Dinos Stats

CALGARY – Down 31 points with two minutes to go in the third quarter, the Calgary Dinos somehow found life and crawled all the way back to eight points down before falling 96-87 to the Trinity Western Spartans Friday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.

The victory, the Spartans’ 13th consecutive, moves them to 15-2 on the season and keeps pace with UBC for first place in Canada West, while the Dinos fall to 5-10 on the campaign with the rematch upcoming Saturday night.

Jacob Doerksen’s 26 points led all players on the night, while Calvin Westbrook went 3-for-3 from three to finish with 16 while Tonner Jackson added 12 and Tristan Smith 11.

For Calgary, Tyler Fidler was solid again with 24 points on 7-of-18 shooting from the field, with Dustin Reding adding 17. Trevor Debolt and Matt Letkeman were the other Dinos in double digits, draining 13 and 12, respectively.

The Spartans overnight in Calgary and will take on the Dinos once more Saturday, with tip-off slated for 8:00 p.m. in the Jack.

Regina 83 Winnipeg 80

Cougars-Wesmen Stats

WINNIPEG - The Regina Cougars got off to a quick and later hung on for dear life. The Cougars defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 83-80 Friday night at the Duckworth Centre.

With the win Regina improves their record to 9-6. Winnipeg's record falls to 2-13.

Paul Gareau led the Cougars with a game high 28 points, and led the team with 10 rebounds. Jeff Lukomski added 15, including four-three pointers and eight assist. Kris Heshka had 14 and Marek Downarowicz added 11 points.

Kelvin Smith led the Wesmen with 23 points, including three-three pointers. Lynden Drayton-Barrow added 16, with four-three pointers. Benny Iko finished with a double-double 15 points, 13 rebounds. Nick Lother had 11 points.

The two teams will meet up Saturday in the final game of the two game weekend series. Tip off at the Duckworth Centre is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

Thunderbirds-Bobcats Stats

BRANDON, MB - The UBC Thunderbirds jumped to an early lead against the Brandon Bobcats and hung on to it for all forty minutes winning 101-42.
 
The Thunderbirds started the game on a 10-0 run before jumping to a 23-6 lead after the first quarter. The 'Birds kept the pressure on in the second quarter taking a 52-13 lead into the half.  The Bobcats would muster more offense in the second half, but the 'Birds would still walk away with a convincing win.
 
Five Thunderbirds finished in double-digit scoring, led by reigning CIS player of the year Josh Whyte who had a game-high 19 points, shooting 7-11 from the field, including 5-8 from beyond the arc. Nathan Yu added 16 points, Brent Malish and Doug Plumb both added 14, and Tommy Nixon finished with 12 points.
 
Washington, DC native Kyrie Coleman finished with a team-high 11 points for the Bobcats.
 
The two teams will meet again Saturday for the second half of the weekend series at 8:00 pm in Brandon.

VICTORIA - Ryan MacKinnon got into foul trouble picking up his fourth personal early in the final quarter and was forced to the bench. He returned with a vengeance, draining eight consecutive points to put the Victoria Vikes men’s basketball team into a double-digit lead en route to a 68-53 victory over the Lethbridge Pronghorns at McKinnon Gym on Friday.

With the victory, the Vikes improve to 10-7, while the Pronghorns fall further out of the playoff picture and now sit at 5-12.

MacKinnon had a team-high 17 points including a pair of fourth-quarter three-pointers. Marco Dolcetti earned 12 points and added four steals in the victory, while Jeff Cullen added 13 points and four assists.

The Vikes host Lethbridge on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at McKinnon Gymnasium.

EDMONTON - Despite an outstanding individual effort by Manitoba Bison Sean Maxwell, the Alberta Golden Bears overwhelmed their opponents with a decisive 97-67 victory on Friday at the U of A’s Main Gym in Edmonton.

St. Paul, Minnesota native Maxwell drained eight treys in the game, falling just three short of the record by Regina’s Jeff Lukomski a little over a year ago (Jan. 10, 2009), incidentally with Manitoba as his opponent.  The octet of three-pointers led the senior forward to a game-high 26 points, while third-year guard Jonar Huertas added 15.

Jordan Baker led Alberta in scoring with 18 points while fellow sophomores Todd Bergen-Henengouwen and Colin MacKinnon put up 16 and 15, respectively.

Game two of the weekend series goeson Saturday at 8:00 p.m.
