Volleyball Axewomen grab first win of season vs Cape Breton

WOLFVILLE N.S. – The Acadia Axewomen (0-7) and Cape Breton Capers(0-6), two of three teams in the AUS standings who have yet to record a win in the regular season, faced each other Saturday night at War Memorial Gymnasium. It looked as though Cape Breton had completed the comeback and would take this matchup to five sets but Acadia was able to put the fourth and final set away late and took the victory 4-1.

The teams were evenly matched to begin the first set, but Acadia scored four consecutive points nearing the end of the set to gain the advantage. Despite the Capers attempt to recover the Axewomen won the first 25-19.

The second set was led by Acadia with great blocking causing a big problem for Cape Breton's offense. The Axewomen led by as many as nine points but Cape Breton would answer back late in the set with seven straight points off a number of kills and Acadia errors. The Axewomen would catch a break on a "failed serve" and close out the set 25-21.

With their backs against the wall and the game on the line the Capers were not going down without a fight. They fought for every point and won the third set 25-20, forcing a fourth with a full team effort.

Acadia jumped out to a 15-5 stranglehold in the fourth set and looked to be sure to end the match early, but Cape Breton showed great resistance pushing the match to a 24-24 tie but the Capers lost steam, Acadia scored the next two points off a Cape Breton attack error and a kill by Fiona McGuinty and finished the final set 26-24.

Middle Janette Simmonds had six kills, six digs and four blocked shots in the loss for the Capers earning the Subway Player of the Game. Sarah Jane Ferguson had 12 kills for Cape Breton and Allana Rendell added 24 assists and 13 digs.

Katarina Kalajdzic had six kills in 21 total attempts for the Axewomen, earning the Subway player of the Game for her team. Olivia Boudreault added 38 assists and 12 digs while rookie outside hitter Carlotta Fresca had 13 kills and nine digs.

Acadia will travel to Halifax tomorrow to take on Saint Mary's in an afternoon matchup for their final game before the Winter Break. Cape Breton will also be travelling to Halifax tomorrow to take on Dalhousie.
