Antigonish, NS - The StFX X-Women skated to a narrow 3-2 victory over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties Saturday afternoon at the Charles V. Keating Centre.
Veteran fifth year forward and X-Women captain Daley Oddy (Cranbrook, BC) scored the game winner while StFX was on the power play with just under two minutes to play in the game to seal the victory, StFX's second win in as many days.
The first 20 minutes of the game opened with StFX going on the power play only 12 seconds in after Mounties forward Andrea Dinan (Miramichi, NB) was sent off on a tripping call. The score remained scoreless through two power plays until 14:23 when X-Women defense Nicole Corcoran (Bloomfield, PE) scored while on the man advantage. Assists came from veteran forward Sarah Bujold (Riverview, NB) and freshman forward Emerson Elliott (Aurora, ON).
X-Women outshot the Mounties 10-2 in the opening period as the 1-0 lead held at the first intermission.
The Mounties tied the score 4:30 into the second period with Campbell finding the back of the net off a 3-on-1 rush with Jessica Desautels (Oakville, ON) and Heather Richards (St. Anthony, NL). Campbell beat X-Women goaltender Carley Molnar (London, ON) up high on the shot.
The X-Women responded at 12:47 with their own goal scored by Sarah Bujold. Following a face off win and pass by Oddy, Bujold found herself alone in the slot and fired a wrist shot, beating Mounties goaltender Keri Martin (Brampton, ON) and bringing the score to 2-1.
Shots were 23-7 in favour of StFX in the second period.
Third period action saw the Mounties Campbell score her second marker of the day at 4:17, again off an assist by Desautels. The goal was scored on Mount A's first shot on net in the period, catching Molnar off guard.
Following several attempts on behalf of both teams to break the tie, StFX's Oddy scored the game winning goal while on the power play with only 1:58 remaining in regulation. The winner was a sharp angled, short-sided shot following a play behind the net by Elliott.
Total shots in the game favoured StFX at 44-11 as Martin played well in the Mounties net with 41 saves in the losing effort. Molnar turned aside only 9 pucks in the win for the X-Women.
Mounties were 0-for-4 on the power play while StFX was 2-for-6.
Oddy was named Subway Player of the Game, with Bujold taking second star honours. Mounties two-goal scorer Campbell was awarded the third star.
X-Women play next at St. Thomas University on October 20th at 7pm. Dalhousie will visit Mount Allison tomorrow at 5pm.
