Guelph, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons field hockey team played the Waterloo Warriors Wednesday night in front of a large home crowd at Varsity Field in Guelph. The Gryphons move to 2-0 on the season following the 5-0 win.
The Gryphons went on the offensive right away, keeping the majority of the play in the Warriors' end. Guelph defenders Melissa Vogl (North Vancouver, BC) and Jessica Donaldson (Kingston, Ont.) covered their end of the field and their strong passes to Nicole Paola and Erin Houle allowed the Gryphons to maintain their offensive pressure. Their hard work was rewarded in the 10th minute when Daniela Jelec (Mississauga, Ont.) scored the first goal of the game. Guelph proceeded to score two more goals in the first half thanks to Laura Straus (Waterloo, Ont.) and Crysta Stubbs (Whitney, Ont.).
In the second half, Jelec scored again off of a rebound from teammate Olivia Lane (Guelph, Ont) and the Gryphons wrapped up the game with a hat trick by Jelec off of a rebound from a penalty corner in the 66th minute of play.
Throughout the game, Guelph's offence dominated, winning almost every one-on-one they attempted and stick-handling effectively around their opponents. Their ball control and deliberate passing contributed to their excellent offensive play en route to a 5-0 victory.
"It was great to see our defenders overlapping to contribute to our attack which will make us more lethal," said head coach Michelle Turley.
