EDMONTON - The CIS #7 Alberta Golden Bears moved into a tie for first place in the Canada West East division standings thanks to a 74-69 win over the #3 Saskatchewan Huskies on Saturday at the Saville Community Sport Centre.

Third-year Edmonton guard Jordan Baker once again was the engine that drove Alberta, as he finished with 25 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals in 37 minutes worth of court time.  The 2010 Canada West First Team All-Star now sits third in Canada West scoring, where he averages 23.5 points per game, and tied for first in conference rebounding with an average of 11 per contest.  Todd Bergen-Henengouwen added 16 points in the win, while fifth-year guard Daniel Ferguson chipped in with 15.

Fifth-year guard Duncan Jones, originally from Calgary, led Saskatchewan in scoring with 17 points, including nine from beyond the arc.  Chris Unsworth added 13 points, while 2010 Canada West scoring leader Jamelle Barrett chipped in with 12 points.

Alberta, now 3-1 on the season, travels to Winnipeg next weekend to take on the 1-3 Wesmen, while the 1-3 Huskies return home to host the 3-1 Lethbridge Pronhorns.

VANCOUVER - The UBC Thunderbirds finished their opening weekend sweep on Saturday with a decisive 100-71 win over the Regina Cougars, led by fifth-year point guard Nathan Yu's 34 points

Yu led the T-Birds to a hot start with eight first quarter points, helping his side outscore the Cougars 30-13 in the opening frame.

Nathan Yu came off the court midway through the fourth, finishing with six rebounds and eight assists to complement his game-high scoring total. Rookie shooting guard Malcolm Williams had 15 points, all from three-point range. Tommy Nixon scored 19 points and led the T-Bird defensive effort with five steals.

Nostedt finished with a team-high 16 points for the Cougars. Paul Gareau and Connor Burns both cracked double digits in scoring as well.

The Cougars fall to 0-3 and will search for their first win at home next weekend against Calgary.

The T-Birds start the year 2-0 and have a pair of games against rival Trinity Western to look forward to next week. The 'Birds and Spartans square off on Thursday, November 17 and Saturday, November 19 at War Memorial Gym.

VICTORIA - Senior guard Zac Andrus of Vashon Island, Wa., shot five-for-eight from the floor and seven-for-eight from the line to finish with 19 points to guide the UVic Vikes to an 87-76 win over the Brandon Bobcats at McKinnon Gymnasium on Saturday night in front of 843 fans.

With the win, the CIS #9 Vikes improve to 4-0 on the season, top in the Canada West. Brandon falls to 1-3.

Ryan MacKinnon led the Vikes with a  game-high 22 points, and two other UVic players were in double-digit scoring - Michael Acheampong of Toronto had 16 points and five defensive rebounds, while Mike Berg added 14 on the scoreboard along with five boards.

Kyle Vince and Donovan Gayle had 18 points each to lead the Bobcats.

The Vikes host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack next at 8:00 p.m. on Friday Nov. 18 and at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Brandon hosts Manitoba next weekend.

LANGLEY, BC – The Trinity Western men’s basketball team made it back-to-back wins on the weekend as they beat Manitoba 95-68 Saturday at the Langley Events Centre.

With the Spartans Kyle Coston back in the lineup after missing Friday’s game due to injury, Trinity Western was a much different team and, utilizing a second quarter in which they outscored Manitoba 30-10, cruised to a 27-point victory.

Coston was especially dominant in the second quarter as he had 14 points to lead the Spartans charge and would finish the contest with a game-high 25 points. Also for Trinity Western, it was Calvin Westbrook with 18 points.

Manitoba’s Braedon Speer had 18 points in a losing cause while Stephan Walton contributed a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The win, coupled with Friday’s 78-77 victory over Winnipeg, improves the Spartans record to 2-2 on the season while the loss drops Manitoba to 1-3 on the year.

The Spartans are back in action Nov. 17 when they travel to UBC to play in a rare Thursday night contest starting at 7:00 p.m. Manitoba will play at Brandon next Friday and Saturday with both games tipping off at 8:00 p.m.

CALGARY – Buoyed by a 33-point third quarter, the Calgary Dinos got back to .500 with an 85-57 win over the UBC Okanagan Heat Saturday night in Canada West men’s basketball action in the Jack Simpson Gym.

Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson was the leader with a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double that included an impressive 11 defensive rebounds. Fifth-year forward Dustin Reding added 19 points in 18 minutes in an efficient performance on 8-of-13 shooting, while Tyler Fidler played just eight minutes but made his presence felt – scoring 12 points on 5-for-6 shooting.

UBC Okanagan was led by a 12-point performance by Bret MacDonald, while Yassine Ghomari chipped in with 11. Mack Roth, Steve Morrison, and Simon Pelland added eight points apiece for the Heat, while Ed Dane Medi was the visitors’ rebounding leader with five on the night.

The Dinos head back on the road next week, where they will face the Regina Cougars in a two-game series. UBC Okanagan heads to Abbotsford, B.C. to take on the Fraser Valley Cascades next weekend.

LETHBRIDGE, AB – After cruising to an easy 88-61 win last night against the UBC-Okanagan Heat, the Lethbridge Pronghorns men’s basketball team met a fiercer opponent in the Thompson Rivers WolfPack, fighting to a 106-93 win on Saturday.
 
The American duo of guards, Alex Fletcher and Daryl Cooper, came up big for the victors, with 25 points apiece.  Post Derek Waldner scored 14 and pulled down eight boards, while Morgan Duce chipped in 11.
 
The WolfPack relied heavily on another American, Washingtonian swingman Chas Kok, who was 6-8 from three-point range, accumulating 45 points, even against intense defensive pressure.  He was aided by 16 points from both Kevin Pribilsky and Canada West scoring leader Justin King.
 
This game marks the first time in 12 years that the Pronghorns men’s basketball team has stood atop their conference division, now tied with Alberta at 3-1.
 
The Pronghorns will move on to play the Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon next weekend, November 18-19, with the men’s game tipping off at 8:00 p.m., while Thompson Rivers will meet up with the Vikes in Victoria.  Games will be streamed online at www.canadawest.tv.

ABBOTSFORD, BC - The Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Winnipeg Wesmen 89-69 to improve their Canada West regular season conference record to 3-1.  The Cascades will host UBC O Heat next weekend at the Envision Athletic Centre. 

UFV improves to 3-1.

UFV was led by Michael James with 18 points as six different Cascades scored in double figures.  Jasper Moedt and added 17 points and five rebounds and Joel Friesen 12 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.

Winnipeg was paced by Travis Krahn with a team-high 17 points.  Benny Iko added 13 points and 13 rebounds in the loss to UFV.
