Claire Vercheval of Ste. Julie, Que., tallied 13 points as McGill swept eighth-ranked Montreal 25-18, 25-23, and 25-20 in RSEQ women's volleyball, Saturday, at Love Competition Hall.
The win put an end to an eight-game losing streak against the Carabins, dating back to a 3-0 exhibition victory on Oct. 10, 2015 at last year's Martlet Invitational.
Vercheval, a physical education freshman, earned her points on the strength of 12 kills and a block. The 6-foot-2 power hitter also had two assists and seven digs.
Myriam Robitaille and
Erika Cournoyer followed with 11.5 points apiece. Robitaille, a French language and literature junior from Terrebonne, Que., had eight kills, an ace, and two blocks, and added seven digs and an assist. Rowan Fletcher of Montreal collected 8.5 points, courtesy of five kills and four blocks, and was credited with 11 digs.
Marjolaine Ste-Marie, a physical therapy senior from St. Lambert, Que., led the Martlets' defensive effort with a dozen digs.
Marie-Alex Bélanger scored a game-high 16 points for the visitors, thanks to 13 kills, one ace, and a pair of blocks.
The Martlets held a 36-33 lead in kills and a 58-48 advantage in digs, while both teams registered four service aces.
McGill (1-2) next hosts Sherbrooke (2-1) at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Love Competition Hall. Montreal (2-1) visits Laval (2-0) that evening.
