The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's basketball team fell 57-33 decision to the Queen's Gaels on Friday night (Jan. 15) at Goldring Centre for High Performance Sport.

With the loss, the Blues drop to 3-5 but remain in third place, while the Gaels improve to 7-1 and sit atop the OUA East division.

Fourth-year forward Alanna Garner led the Blues with 12 points, six boards and two steals, while Rahshida Atkinson, Abena Addo and Keyira Parkes each had four points in the loss.

The Blues held their own with the No. 10 nationally ranked Gaels in a low-scoring first quarter. After Garner opened the game with a long three-pointer, the Gaels were held to only six points over 7:54 minutes of play. Back-to-back baskets from Gaels star Jenny Wright helped Queen's to a 12-7 advantage after 10 minutes to action.

Both teams traded three's to open the second frame, but the Gaels went on a 12-4 streak to build a 10-point lead (24-14) midway through the quarter. Queen's was up 27-20 at halftime.

U of T kept pace with Queen's with Garner leading the way with 5 of their 9 third-quarter points. The Gaels led by nine (38-29) heading into the final frame.

The Blues brought the game within seven with an early Atkinson basket, but back-to-back steals and lay-ups from Gaels guard Abby Dixon sparked a 13-0 run that would seal the Queen's victory.

Dixon led all players with 13 points, while Wright had a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards and Robyn Pearson notched 11 points and a game-high 20 rebounds in the victory.
