WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen continue to struggle to find their first win of 2017 as their losing streak grows to 5 with a 3-0 sweep by the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies.

In all three sets the Huskies jumped to early leads, yet Acadia did not give up.

Down 6-2 in the opening set, the Huskies couldn't hold back a charge by the Axewomen with Acadia eventually gaining a 14-11 lead.

But a string of three kills, two service aces, two ball handling errors and several attack errors and the Huskies regained a 20-15 lead that Acadia could not close down. A kill by Erica Dowling (Lower Sackville, N.S.) ended the game at 25-21.

Tied at three in the second game, Saint Mary's pulled together six kills and a service ace to gain a 9-3 lead early in the second set. Acadia narrowed the lead down to 11-9, but four Acadia attack errors opened the lead to 17-10

Once again the Axewomen would not give up and gained ground on a 20-14 lead to an eventual 25-18 second set loss

The Axewomen trailed for the most part of the third game by 2 to 4 points until the Huskies broke the lead wide open at 14-10 and onward with an eventual 24-15 win.

Huskie Erica Dowling was named the Subway Player of the game for her 6 kills and 20 digs, while teammate Erin Smith (Moncton, N.B.) posted a match high 13 kills and a hitting efficiency of .542.

Lauryn Renzella (Stouffville, Ont.) and Fiona McGuinty (Ottawa, Ont.) each notched 6 kills for the Axewomen and Daniella Trodel (Richmond Hill, Ont.) was named Acadia's Player of the Game with four kills and two service aces.

Acadia's head coach Michelle Wood noted that the early leads in each set was a contributing factor in the loss.

"We struggle starting sets as the aggressor by getting on top of the score", said Wood. "Our defensive transition efficiency gets us back in the game but we stay in serve receive rotations for too long on occasions forcing us to have to come from behind."

The Axewomen drop to 3-11, while the Huskies improve to 7-6. The Axewomen host the first place 11-0 Dalhousie Tigers tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and the Huskies host Moncton on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
