(Halifax, N.S.) – The Dalhousie Tigers won their home opener 3-1 over the visiting Axewomen Sunday afternoon at Dalplex.
It was a see-saw affair in the first set with both teams trading points early in the match. Acadia was first to 16 for the technical time out with a three-point lead over the Tigers. From there, the Axewomen pushed ahead to eventually take the first set 25-19, despite the Tigers best efforts.
The Tigers came out swinging in the second set with strong serving from Julie Moore (Halifax, N.S.) and Lauren Koskowich (Calgary, Alta.), opening up an 8-1 lead early on forcing Acadia to take a time out. Dalhousie continued the pressure and had a 16-7 lead at the technical timeout. Acadia was able to get a few more points, but eventually fell 25-13, leaving the match tied at one apiece.
Acadia earned the first three points in the third set, with a kill from Lucy Glen-Carter (Toronto, Ont.) and Tigers errors. The Tigers battled back earning four straight points on strong serving from Moore. Both teams would go on to trade points and the lead until the Tigers pulled ahead 16-12 at the technical timeout. Dalhousie limited Acadia to just four more points to close out the third set 25-17 to take a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set started just like the first, with the team trading points. Dalhousie led by as many as six before reaching the technical timeout with a 16-10 lead, thanks in part to strong serving from Hannah Aldcorn (Calgary, Alta.) and Libby Falkenham (Halifax, N.S.).
The Tigers continued to pull ahead, fending off a late set five-point run on serving from Lauryn Renzella (Stouffville, Ont.) to win the fourth and final set 25-17.
Leading the way for the Axewomen was Renzella who had 11 kills for 13.0 points. Regan Herrington (Georgina, Ont.) had 28 assists while Michaela Sabean (Bridgewater, N.S.) had a team-high 19 digs.
The Tigers Courtney Baker (Bridgewater, N.S.) was named the Subway Player of the Game with 23 assists, four kills and three blocks. Julie Moore had a match-high 12 kills and 20 digs.
Both teams are back in action Friday, November 2nd. The Tigers host Saint Mary's at 6:00pm while the Axewomen head to Newfoundland to take on Memorial.
