The Guelph Gryphons Men's Soccer Team lost today (Sept. 2) to the visiting Laurier Golden Hawks in an upsetting 2-0 loss at the Gryphons Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Gryphons drop to 1-1 while the Golden Hawks rise to 1-1 in the OUA West standings.
In the early minutes of the game, the Gryphons came out strong, building on the momentum gained from their victory over the Waterloo Warriors yesterday (Sept. 1). Yet despite the opportunities created, the Gryphons fell to an early 1-0 deficit.
It was a trickling goal in the 11th minute, scored by Laurier Midfield, Dani Patros (Kitchener, ON) that put the Golden Hawks ahead. The second and eventual game winner came 11 minutes later as Adam Zrebiec (Kitchener, ON) snuck one past Guelph keeper
Chad Paparoni(Burlington, ON).
Following a brief injury break, Guelph was able to rally some momentum that left Laurier out of the Guelph side for the remainder of the half, but were unable to capitalize on any opportunities in the Laurier end. Yet it was during this time that excellent communication between Gryphon strikers
Robert Murphy (Guelph, ON) and
Jared Agyemang (Brampton, ON) culminated with numerous opportunities on net.
Unfortunately none of these attempts were able to faze Laurier keeper, Brett Harrington (Tillsonburg, ON) who recorded his first shutout of the season.
The lack of goals in the first half clearly didn't discourage the Gryphons who were able to carry their positive momentum into the second half by dominating possession over the Golden Hawks. While Laurier was able to find some momentum to carry them into the Guelph half, they were quickly thwarted by the combined efforts of
Jacob Stolle (Ottawa),
Jeremy Gaylor(Mississauga, ON),
Paul Manchisi(Oakville, ON) and
Justin Springer (Burlington, ON)
The Guelph Gryphons look to redeem themselves on Friday, September 7th against the UOIT Ridgebacks. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
