Box Score SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Bishop's Gaiters suffered their second loss of the Quebec university football season as they were shut out, 61-0, by the No. 1-ranked Montreal Carabins at a sweltering CEPSUM stadium in Montreal, Friday.
Bishop's (0-2) was unable to get their offence untracked against the defending Mitchell Bowl champions, as they suffered their tenth straight head-to-head defeat to the Carabins.
Montreal (2-0), who moved into the top spot nationwide this week, got rushing touchdowns from Sean Thomas-Erlington, Gabriel Parent and Samuel Caron, while Guillaume Paquet, Simon Nadeau-Piuze, Louis-Mathieu Normandin and Simon Losier-Tremblay all found the end zone on receptions. Carabins place kicker Félix Ménard-Brière added two field goals and a single point, as he finished with 14 points. A single by backup place kicker David Deschamps and a pair of safety touches rounded out the scoring for Montreal, who led 17-0 after the first quarter and 43-0 at halftime.
The Gaiters were led by fourth-year defensive back
Jean Gayrard (Thetford Mines, Que.), who recorded a career-high 12 tackles in the game (10 solo, four assisted). His total was the second-highest in program history, behind only James Yurichuk's 13.5 tackles against McGill on Oct. 6, 2007. Gayrard, a two-time Bishop's male Academic Student-Athlete of the Year, now has 80.5 tackles for his career.
Friday's game also saw the CIS debut of quarterback
Jaeden Marwick (Regina, Sask.). The Regina Thunder product, and former Prairie Football Conference MVP, went 3-for-8 for 27 yards. He came on in relief of
Mathieu Demers (Quebec City, Que.), who went 5-for-9 for 30 yards with an interception.
For Montreal, Samuel Caron went 16-for-19 for 216 yards with two touchdown passes, while Pierre-Luc Vareghyi was 6-for-7 for 95 yards with a pair of majors as well.
The Carabins' Thomas-Erlington finished with two carries for 37 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game midway through the first quarter with an injury. His departure might have briefly lifted the Gaiters' hopes of an upset, but the loss of the RSEQ all-star did not decimate the Montreal rushing attack, as Gabriel Parent picked up 62 yards on eight carries, and the Carabins combined to pick up 232 yards on the ground.
The Gaiters head back to Montreal next Friday to face the McGill Redmen, who are also winless on the year. Kickoff at Molson Stadium is set for 7 p.m. No. 1-ranked Montreal, meanwhile, hosts Concordia (1-0) at the same time.
