Varsity reds win 3-1 over visiting Huskies

(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds earned their first conference win of the season, a three sets to one victory over the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies.

The VReds took the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-19 before the Huskies rallied. The visitors won the third set 25-14. UNB took the match with a 25-23 fourth set triumph.

Despite the win, Varsity Reds head coach Jilliane Portelli wasn't entirely satisfied. "We didn't really play to our ability," said Portelli. "That was kind of lacking our execution and our usual determination."

Rookie Megan Kuciak (Ottawa, ON) led the Varsity Reds with 14 kills. "As a rookie, I always want to go out and prove myself, so I might as well go out and play my hardest."

Kuciak was named the Subway Player of the Game for the VReds. Rookie Lindsay Donovan earned that honour for the Huskies. Donovan had 10 kills and registered a .533 hitting percentage.

The win came in UNB's home opener and improves the Varsity Reds record to 2 and 4.

Portelli says her young team needs to be better. "Any other team with more experience and it might've been a different story tonight."
