(ANTIGONISH, N.S.) - Anchored by a stellar defensive effort – and the shutout goalkeeping of freshman Erin Visser (Whitby, Ont.) – the StFX X-Women defeated the Cape Breton Capers in AUS soccer action Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium.

"It was a really important win for us," X-Women captain Bobbie Martin (Ottawa, Ont.) said after the match. The fourth-year defender, who was named Subway player of the match, credited her teammates for a great effort.

"We are going to keep moving forward and build off this win," she added.

In front of more than 200 fans, Margaux Fraser (Mississauga, Ont.) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute. The freshman won a battle for possession with a Caper defender before depositing a low shot inside the right post behind Tiffany O'Donnell (Cole Harbour, N.S.).

Visser made eight saves for the victory, including two point-blank efforts against Caper scoring threat Karolyne Blain (Sudbury, Ont.). On both occasions, the fourth-year forward used her speed to get behind the X-Women defenders, but could not solve Visser.

The Capers (4-2-1) return to action Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host the Memorial University Sea-Hawks (4-3-0) in Sydney at 1 p.m.

The X-Women (3-2-2) will travel to Wolfville Friday, Oct. 3 for a 5 p.m. match-up with the Acadia Axewomen (4-0-4) before hosting their Homecoming 2014 battle versus the Memorial University SeaHawks Sunday, Oct. 5. Match time is set for noon at Oland Stadium.
