In their second to last road trip of the regular season, the Lancer men's volleyball team closed out the weekend with an exciting five set 3-2 (16-25, 25-16, 28-26, 21-25, 15-9) victory over the host Guelph Gryphons.
Despite the win, the Lancers continue to sit just outside of the playoff picture, and are in a tight battle with Western and Guelph for the final spot, but have two weeks left in the regular season to move up in the standings.
Windsor took an early 9-8 lead in the first set, but the Gryphons battled back to take the game 25-16. In the second, Windsor built a quick 5-1 lead forcing the home team to call an early time-out. The Lancers maintained their momentum and took the second same by the same 25-16 score.
In the third, the Lancers built another early lead once again forcing Guelph to call another early time-out. The Gryphons came back to tie the game 8-8 and the teams continued to trade points right until the very end when the Lancers pulled ahead in extra points to win the set 28-26.
Guelph managed to come away with the win in a very intense fourth set to send the game into a fifth and final game. Windsor opened with three quick points and rode that momentum to a 9-3 lead in the final set, en route to a 15-9 victory.
Fifth year
Adam Thompson led the Blue & Gold with 16 points and 12 kills, while
Gabriel Burlacu also hit double digits with 14 points and 10 kills.
Windsor will return home for their final regular season games next weekend. On Saturday the Lancers will host the RMC Paladins at 1:00pm in the Department of Athletics' annual Breast Cancer Awareness Day before honouring their graduating seniors on Sunday at 3:00pm when they face the Queen's Gaels.
