EDMONTON - Alanna Fittes scored four tries and 32 points overall to lead the CIS #2 Alberta Pandas to a convincing 62-17 win over the #8 Calgary Dinos. The game was the Canada West season opener for both and took place on Saturday at the Ellerslie Rugby Park.

Fittes, a third-year back three player who hails from Rimbey, Alberta, was a dynamo on the pitch for Alberta. Not only did she score four tries, several of the sprint past Calgary defender variety, but she also kicked six converts to finish the match with 32 points. Fifth-year Louise Chavarie scored a pair of tries for Alberta, which is the defending Canada West champion, while Janelle Romanchuk, Sabrina Kelly, Elizabeth Steele and Chelsea Guthrie, the 2012 Canada West MVP, all scored singles.

The game was a rematch of the 2012 Canada West championship game, which the Pandas won 20-12.

On Saturday, Calgary got tries from Samantha Crandell, Sarah Adriano and Elizabeth MacKinnon, while Kate Scotland, who led Canada West in points last year, converted once.

The Pandas will next be in action when they travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, Sept. 27 and Victoria Vikes on Sept. 29. Calgary will make the same trip, but play the BC teams in reverse order, starting with Victoria on the 27th and finishing in Vancouver on the 29th.

VICTORIA -TheVictoria Vikes women's rugby squad opened its season on Friday at Wallace Field, upsetting the CIS #9 Lethbridge Pronghorns 18-15. The win over the Horns is the first for Victoria in over a decade of Canada West play, as the Vikes make their run towards their first CIS banner in UVic history.

Laura Crowe-Hutchon opened the scoring with her first try of the season, while third-year prop Jaiden Parhar led the young Vikes squad with two tries. Vike Kara Galbraith scored on a penalty kick just before the final whistle to seal the final three points for the win. Kim Leavitt, Cassandra Orr and Nicole Ronsky posted tries for the Pronghorns.

Deadlocked with under five-minutes remaining, the Vikes were rewarded a penalty kick with the chance to seal the teams first victory of the season and first win over the three-time CIS champions. Kara Galbraith, a presence on the front line throughout much of the game made no mistake, driving the ball straight through the uprights for the Vikes 18-15 victory.

Lethbridge is at UBC on Sunday. Next up the Vikes face the Calgary Dinos, Friday Sept. 27 at Wallace Field.
