Wesmen Snap WolfPack Winning Streak At Three In Men’s Volleyball

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men's volleyball team has seen its Canada West winning streak snapped at three.

The WolfPack came up with a lackluster performance and fell in straight sets to the visiting University of Winnipeg Wesmen.  The scores at the Tournament Capital Centre on Friday (Nov 14) were 25-20,25-21,25-22.

The Wesmen are ranked seventh in the CIS top 10 rankings and improved to 8 and 1.  The WolfPack fall to 3 and 8.

"We didn't look like we wanted to play on a Friday night," said a discouraged WolfPack head coach Pat Hennelly. " I don't know why.  It seemed like we were chasing all night. They would hit a ball and we would react back. We were timid.  They moved the ball around enough that we really couldn't get a play. It is really frustrating.  We had another clunker at home on a Friday night."

"It didn't look like we wanted to play again,"Hennelly lamented.  " I don't know what is going on in warm ups. I guess we will have to investigate. We didn't look ready to play in the first two sets. Winnipeg did just enough to keep us off balance.  We couldn't string together some consistant play.

The Wesmen had nine and a half team blocks in comparison to only three for TRU.

Winnipeg was led by Tom Douglas-Powell (5th year, outside, Brisbane, AUS) with 17 kills in 26 opportunities with two digs and three block assists.  Casey Shouten (3rd year, outside, East St Paul, MB) had 12 kills in 23 chances with a service ace, six digs, one solo block and two block assists.

Joshua McKay (4th year, setter, Winnipeg, MB) had 35 assists.

For TRU—they were led by Brad Gunter (4th year, outside hitter, Courtenay, BC).  The CIS Player of the Year had 18 kills in 35 swings with three digs.  He was named the TRU Bookstore/MacDonalds "Leader of the Pack" player of the match.

"Brad played well but I thought Stuart Richey (5th year, outside hitter, Gibson's, BC) could have been player of the game," stated Hennelly. " Richey  tried to ignite us."  He had seven kills in 14 chances with three digs.

Casey Knight (5th year, outside hitter, Salt Spring Island, BC) had 18 kills in 35 opportunities with three digs and a  solo block.

Graham Stoliker (4th year, setter, Surrey, BC) had 30 assists and four digs.   Matt Krueger (5th year, libero, Abbotsford, BC) had a team high six digs.

The two teams will battle it out again on Saturday (Nov 15) at the Tournament Capital Centre. Game time is 6:45 pm.
