Memorial sweeps UNB to start season

(St. John's, NL) – The Memorial Sea-Hawks completed the weekend sweep of the UNB Varsity Reds with an 87-81 victory on Sunday afternoon at The Field House.

Memorial and UNB would trade baskets for the majority of the opening quarter with Vasilije Curcic leading the way for Memorial with 6 first quarter points, while Jamaal Potopsingh had 4 for UNB.  The teams were tied 17-17 after one.

The Sea-Hawks would go into the halftime break with a 7-point advantage behind some hot shooting from Kieran Hawksley.  Hawksley was a perfect 3 for 3 from the outside and finished the quarter with 12 points.

UNB regrouped to start the second half and picked up the pressure on the Sea-Hawks.  The Varsity Reds forced Memorial into 19 turnovers and did well to turn those turnovers into 28 points.  The Sea-Hawks forced UNB into 18 turnovers, but were only able to manage 8 points off those turnovers.

The Sea-Hawks finished the game with a 43.5% FG percentage, while also shooting 36.0% from beyond the arc.  UNB finished with a 35.9% FG percentage and only shot 26.1% from outside.

The top performers for the Sea-Hawks were Daniel Gordon who finished with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.  Kieran Hawksley chipped in with 16 points, while Davion Parnsalu helped secure the victory with 15 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Javon Masters was the high scorer for UNB with 15 points, while also adding 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.  Donnavan Hastings provided 14 points and 8 rebounds for the Varsity Reds off the bench.

Memorial travels to Antigonish, NS next weekend to take on the StFX X-Men for a two-game set.
