WolfPack Women’s Basketball Win Home Opener Convincingly Over UNBC

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack kicked off the 2014-15 Canada West women's basketball regular season in fine fashion.

The WolfPack won their second straight CIS Shoot for the Cure game as they downed the visiting University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves, 85-55.

It was the first game of the year for both teams.

"It was not just a 30-point win," said WolfPack head coach Scott Reeves. "Everyone likes to win games. It is not how many points you win by, it is how you play the game.  I think we can improve in the area of turnovers and our offensive decision making. We scored a lot of points tonight but we got a lot of shots. We still have some adjustments to make if we are going to play at a higher level than we are right now. We can bounce back with some adjustments."

The 'Pack led 26-9 after the first quarter and were up 47-17 at half time.

TRU turned over the ball 23 times in comparison to UNBC's 26.

Michelle Bos (first year, guard, Surrey,BC) had a memorable CIS debut. She was named the TRU Bookstore/McDonalds Leader of the Pack Player of the Game. She had 17 points and 13 rebounds (11 on defense).

"I knew when she was coming in she was CIS ready," Reeves stated. "She is a very smart player. She works hard. She can shoot the ball, she can rebound it. She is an all around developed player. I really like her game for CIS."

Taiysa Worsfold (fourth year, guard, Kamloops, BC) also had a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds.

The top gunner for TRU was Kassie Colonna (third year, forward, Invermere, BC) with 21 points.

The other WolfPack player in double figures was Jorri Duxbury (fifth year, guard, Salmon Arm, BC) with 11 points and five assists.

"I liked the way that we competed," Reeves added.  "We compete every possession. Even though we might be making a mistake we didn't give up.  Even when we were up by a big lead, we played proper basketball. They are a focused group.  They do have a basketball IQ but we have to work on our decision making."

UNBC was led by Sarah Robin (fifth year, forward, Prince Rupert, BC) with 14 points. Cassie Rerick (second year, guard, Prince George, BC) had 11 points.

The two teams will go at it again Saturday (Nov. 8) at the Tournament Capital Centre.  Tip off is 5 pm.
