Axewomen finish road trip to NB with losses

The Axewomen volleyball team opened the AUS regular season on the road in New Brunswick following the interlock weekend in Montreal where the Axewomen came home winless against some very stiff competition.

The battle continued with Moncton after beating them in five sets in preseason exhibition at Dalhousie. This time Moncton would take the win in five sets 20-25, 25-14, 25-21, 18-25 and 15-10)

Head coach Michelle Wood commented on the first of two road games in New Brunswick. "We came out strong and confident in the first set. Our serve receive allowed us to disperse the ball on offense, engaging our middles right off the bat", pointed otu Wood. "Both Fiona (McGuinty) and Marissa (Chin) would be our most efficient attackers in the match both finishing the match above 300".

Hillary Monette finished the match with a game high 27 digs, while teammate Sarah Ross had a match high 16 kills. Jazmin Prest and Marissa Chin added 12 and 10 respectively.

Wood noted the difficulty the Axewomen had against Moncton this time around "We had a difficult time adjusting our defense to the angles created by Monctons offense".

The second of the two match road trip was in Fredericton against UNB.

Wood was blunt on her thoughts of the 3-0 (20-25, 12-25, 17-25) loss the Varsity Reds. "Unfortunately it didn't matter who the opponent was, we managed to hand over 40 points to our opponent based on our own unforced errors", pointed out Wood. "We didn't compete. It's one thing to lose the match and it's another thing to not be present or compete".

Wood added, "Our team needs to understand the flow of the match better in terms of making aggressive errors and putting the ball into play to trust our defense".

Sarah Ross finished above 300 again, providing 4 blocks and both her and Jazmin Prest contributed double digits on defense.

The Axewomen face Dalhousie at home on Sunday November 9 and then host Cape Breton on Saturday, November 15 at 7pm
