VANCOUVER – The CIS #7-ranked Alberta Pandas women’s rugby team dominated the UBC Thunderbirds, winning 60-5 in the second Canada West regular season game for both schools.

The Pandas got off to a quick start as Karlee Carbert caught a pass on the right wing and blasted her way down the sideline for the opening try just three minutes into the match. The Pandas’ Jen Davies and Allison Fairbairn scored tries in the 20th and 27th minutes respectively, which seemed to seal the victory for the visitors, who would end the day with tentries in all.

Hayley Sandboe recorded three of them, Fran Grabinsky had two, while Chelsie Guthrie and Alanna Fittes added the others. Teanna Chase converted three of those tries while Fittes kicked two.

Erin Ryan scored UBC’s first try of the year in the 72nd minute.

UBC’s record drops to 0-2 and they will host Calgary on Friday. Alberta is now 2-0 and plays at Lethbridge on Oct. 2.

VANCOUVER - The CIS #4-ranked, five-time defending Canada West champion Lethbridge Pronghorns shutout the UBC Thunderbirds 33-0 to open the 2011 Canada West women's rugby season.

Lethbridge winger Paula Woyarowsky opened the scoring, then later Cassandra Orr broke free from a scrum around the 22-metre line and easily took in Lethbridge's second try of the game. Neither try was converted - leaving the visitors up 10-0.

Then the Pronghorns' Laura Murphy-Burke put her stamp on the game. She kicked a penalty goal in the 30th minute before pulling off a magnificent run for another try. Murphy-Burke took one pass out of a scrum and faked out a UBC defender before finding enough room up the left side to score. She converted the try to make the score 20-0 at the half.

While UBC didn’t really threaten offensively, it held Lethbridge off the scoreboard for most of the second half, before giving up a penalty goal, and two late, unconverted tries to make the final 33-0.

UBC will have to regroup to play #7 Alberta (1-0-0) on Sunday, 1:00 p.m. at Wolfson Field; Lethbridge will play at Victoria (0-1-0), also on Sunday.
