Gryphons sweep RMC

Kristen Almhjell

GUELPH, Ont. - The University of Guelph women's volleyball team swept the RMC Paladins 3-0 at the W.F. Mitchell Athletic Center tonight. Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, & 25-14.

Guelph jumped to an 11-6 first set lead only to have RMC close the gap and take the lead at 17-15. However, the Gryphons reeled off a 10-2 run of their own to take control and win the set 25-19. Set two saw Guelph jumped to an early three point lead that they held throughout the set taking it 25-21. The Gryphons again took the lead early in the third set and were comfortably ahead until RMC closed the gap to 17-14. From there, Guelph's 8-0 run ended the set and the match winning 25-14.

Coach Funk stated, "The deciding factor tonight was in serve and serve receive as we were able to win both of those battles decisively. Even though it's early in the season, this was almost a must win for us to keep pace with other teams in the league."

The Gryphons offence was led by Julie Gordon (Barrie, Ont.) with 17 points (11 kills, 6 aces) followed by Taylor Crown (Victoria Harbour, B.C) with 12 (10 kills, 1 ace, 1 block). Kristen Almhjell (Richmond, Ont.) was solid defensively again with 16 digs. Almhjell now leads the OUA in digs with a total of 88 on the season, averaging four a game.

Guelph's schedule continues next weekend against McMaster and York.

SPECIAL NOTE:  the Guelph vs. McMaster match for next weekend has been switched from Saturday Nov. 17 at 1pm to Friday Nov. 16 at 6pm due to McMaster hosting the Mitchell Bowl on Saturday.
