(St. John's, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 68-42 in AUS women's basketball action on Saturday night at The Field House. The game was cut short with 9:18 left in the 4th quarter due to a university wide power outage.
The Hawks came out strong and confident against the visiting Huskies in their home opener while Saint Mary's struggled to find consistent scoring, shooting only 25% from the field in the first half.
The Hawks held a strong lead going in to the second half, 46-29, with three seniors shouldering the load offensively; Brooklyn Wright (Cambridge, ON), Sydney Stewart (Sarnia, ON), and Sydney Ezekiel (St. John's, NL) all had double digits after two quarters of competition.
The Sea-Hawks continued their strong play after the break, outscoring the Huskies 22-11 in the 3rd. Haille Nickerson led the way with 8 points in the quarter.
Memorial would get credit for the victory with 9:18 still to play. The Sea-Hawks were led by Sydney Stewart who finished with a game high 19 points, while hauling down 8 rebounds. Brook Wright added 17 points and Sydney Ezekiel finished with 14.
Estelle Eduardo was the top point producer for the Huskies, finishing with 9 points. Arianna Macias chipped in with 7 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the loss.
