Behind a beautiful game-winning goal from fourth-year forward Taylor Day, the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women's hockey team defeated the visiting Ryerson Rams 2-1 in their annual School Day game Thursday afternoon (Feb. 4) at Varsity Arena.

The Blues opened the scoring when first-year forward Jessica Robichaud sent a stunning backhand effort past the Rams goaltender just five minutes into the game to give U of T the early 1-0 lead.

Then late in the second period Day broke loose down the left wing where she was able to put the moves on a Ryerson defender before beating Rams rookie netminder Sydney Authier for her ninth goal of the season to put the Blues up 2-0.

The two goal lead did not last long, as a minute later Ryerson was able to find an answer to Blues first-year goalie Valencia Yordanov to make it a 2-1 game heading into the decisive third period.

In the final frame, Toronto and Ryerson would exchange opportunities with Yordanov and Authier standing tall for each side, but the Blues would hold on securing a fourth straight victory. Yodanov finished the afternoon making 30 saves while Authier collected 19.

The Varsity Blues will next head to Waterloo to take on the Warriors Saturday, February 6. Puck drop is scheduled for 2 p.m.
