Ridgebacks hold on for one-goal victory over Voyageurs

OSHAWA, Ont. – Despite an early scare, the UOIT women's soccer team bounced back for a 2-1 victory over the Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday afternoon.

Helaina Vansoelen capitalized in the third minute of the match for Laurentian on a defensive breakdown by the Ridgebacks to put the Voyageurs up 1-0.

Luckily for the Ridgbeacks, who were outshot 6-2 in the opening half and 9-4 in the match, they were able to take over possession and capitalize on their opportunities as Rhiannon Kissel (Peterborough, Ont.) scored her 19th OUA goal in the ninth minute to knot the match 1-1.

Before the break, a great through ball by Melanie Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ont.) put Katherine Koehler-Grassau (Greely, Ont.) in a one-on-one with a Voyageurs back. She beat her before side stepping keeper Caitlin McNamara to tap in the eventual game-winning goal.

Olivia Tierney (King City, Ont.) made six saves in the UOIT victory, while McNamara made one save in the loss.

UOIT has now earned points in six straight conference matches, winning five of them. The win also sets up a second place match against Nipissing at home on Sunday. With both teams winning on Saturday, the Lakers hold a one-point advantage over the Ridgebacks. Ottawa continues to hold top spot with 25 points.
