Rams unable to tame Ravens' offence

OTTAWA - The Ryerson Rams women's soccer team fell 3-0 to the Carleton Ravens in OUA women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Keith Harris Stadium. It was the second game of the weekend for both squads as the Rams lost 2-0 to the No. 3 Ottawa Gee-Gees Saturday afternoon while the Ravens were coming off a 2-0 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues.

BOXSCORE

The short turnaround resulted in a slow, calculated first half for both sides. A big save by Ryerson's goalkeeper Brittney Clendenan (Ottawa, Ont.) just before halftime was definitely the highlight of the first 45 minutes. A miscue by the Rams' defensive line resulted in some time and space for a Carleton forward on the left side. She cut towards the net and let a low blast go from only a few yards out. Clendenan quickly got down and deflected the ball away to keep the game scoreless.

In the second half, the Ravens' relentless offence proved to be too much to handle. Playing against the wind, the Rams struggled to get the ball out of their defensive zone after some good pressure in the opening minutes. Shortly after Carleton's Nicole Filipow rocketed a shot off the post, Emily Copeland Dinan knocked a cross past Clendenan in the 49th minute to open the scoring.

That marker gave the Ravens all the confidence that they needed. Using the wind to their advantage, Carleton's midfielders began shooting from distance to test Clendenan and keep her on her toes. In the 55th minute, Ravens' forward Sarah Zutrauen fired a high shot from 30 yards out that Clendenan was able to tip up and off the crossbar. Unfortunately, nobody was there to help her with the rebound. Filipow jumped on the loose ball and sent it past Ryerson's helpless keeper to make it 2-0.

Ten minutes later, Filipow broke through a number of Rams' defenders before striking the ball from just inside the 18-yard box. Her shot ricocheted off the crossbar and right onto the foot of Copeland Dinan who calmly volleyed it into the back of the net for her second of the afternoon.

The loss drops Ryerson to 2-4 this season. They remain in seventh place in the OUA East. Meanwhile, Carleton improves to 3-1-1 and currently sit third in the division.

The Rams will look to break their current two game losing streak when they take on the 2-4 Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday, September 18th. Kick off at the Varsity Centre is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
