OSHAWA, Ont. – A last-minute goal Ailish Forfar ruined the UOIT women's hockey team's hope of walking away with three points on Sunday as the Ridgebacks eventually fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Ryerson Rams.
With just 43 seconds remaining and trailing 2-1, Forfar scored her fourth goal of the season to send the game to overtime for the Ryerson Rams.
UOIT earned their lead – twice – off goals by
Sam Forchielli (Hamilton, Ont.).
Her first goal came in the first period, finishing on a breakaway 5:53 into the game after a perfect outlet pass by
Mikaeli Cavell (Edmonton, Alta.) that put her behind the Rams defence.
Kryshanda Green scored the equalizer for Ryerson, assisted by Stephanie Christe, midway through the opening frame at the 10:44 mark. The score remained tied 1-1 after one period, despite the Ridgebacks being outshot 15-4.
In the second period both goaltenders stood tall, as neither allowed a goal over the 20 minutes – even with each team having power play opportunities.
Forchielli's second of the night and third of the season did come on the man advantage after Lauren Nicholson took a goaltender interference penalty 10:48 into the third.
Taking a pass at the top of the faceoff circle, Forchielli worked her way through the Rams defence before slipping the puck past Sydney Authier.
After Forfar's goal to end regulation each team managed two shots over the two overtime periods before the shootout.
The eventual winner came off the stick of Alex Rodriguez as Ryerson took two points at the Campus Ice Centre.
Tori Campbell (Saskatoon, Sask.) made 28 saves in the loss for UOIT, while Authier turned aside 21 Ridgeback shots for in Ryerson's win.
Next weekend UOIT has one game on the road as they travel to St. Catharines to battle the Brock Badgers. The Ridgebacks won't return home until Nov. 19 when they host the Western Mustangs.
